I don't think sealing the engine backplate will hurt. I've used RTV sealant or you could make a gasket out of gasket material. If anything it will help you troubleshoot down your engine issues. As for the o-ring on the carb you might consider getting a thicker o-ring for it or putting a small bead of rtv around the rim of the carb mount.
