It depends on the ESC and motor used.

Most are capable of determining the cell count automatically for 2-4 cells.

And the settings default to something conservative for an outrunner setup.

They also shut the motor off at LVC... something I don't like as I prefer the power reduction instead.

Of course the latter would be fatal for a heli... but that's another kettle of fish....


However switch to an inrunner, a high KV outrunner or geared setup and programming is somewhat mandatory.

For MOST ESC's with most non-super high KV outrunners, no programming is needed, but may be advisable.
