Jimmy,
the reason was primarily that the unit should be small, so it could be mounted in dashboard, or anywhere else in a plane.
Also it should be possible just to "stick" it ontop of the ECU if no other place was available.
Even though the display is small, it is very easy to read, with a very high contrast.
