One advantage of the 600 mAh NiCd battery is that they last a really long time. I have some that are 10 years old and still have good capacities and good self-discharge rates. My experience with higher capacity AA cells (both NiCd and NiMH) is that they don't last nearly as long. More like 3 or 4 years.
