I wouldn't worry about the tail wheel. The Great Planes .40 Cub kit is setup this way also and I never had a problem with it for the few years I had that Cub.

You might be able to find replacement cowls made by other companies or for other similar sized Cubs from different manufacturers.

And Velcro is a great method of installing receivers, but I'm pretty sure it's not uncommon to glue a cross brace over to keep things in place. I've done this a few times and it works fine. Sure, it's more permanent, but I'd rather put in more effort in removing it than have it too easy to come out and risk it falling out in flight.
