You would have to rotate your carb 180 to do it that way. With the throttle in the center (as he has it) the pushrod would hit the engine.
I never had to. If you take the picture you posted you just go past the carb, then the bend brings the rod back at the proper height and the flex in the bend takes care of any misalignment. I did it on a 60 Cloud Dancer with a Magnum .91 I flew it for five years without ever having to take the cowl off.
