Wait.. people got rich from selling kits in this hobby? That'd be a first.
None of the guys involved with the Nemesis NXT are in the hobby business. The designer, John Sharp wants $25K to license it for hobby use. The owner of the Relentless Racing Nemesis has an aviation / consulting company. His company imports the Sbach aerobatic planes and he does sell a flat-plate foamy of the Sbach 342 on his website but I doubt he's selling may of those.
I figure you'd have to sell about 500 kits just to pay the license fee. That's if you can get a factory in China to make them for you and you import them by the container full. Then of course you have to cover all of your startup / prototype costs..
I know that the laser cutting, balsa, and ply just for my one-off cost $160.00 That doesn't include covering, sheeting, composite components (cowl, canopy, and CF rods), decals, and hardware... all of which would come with a typical ARF. And, let’s not forget the labor to put it all together!
I now know why domestically-made kits cost what they do... and I don't even think there are any domestically-made ARF's.
