Default IR Emitter Location

I was told by a very knowledgable person that the IR emitter will be more accurate in the gun mantlet rather than clipped too the gun barrel. As the Tamiya system emitters are mounted. It seems too me that this may be true as I have noticed that tanks with the emitter in the mantlet got more shots on me against how many i had on them.
Does anyone know this too be true, and does it make much of a difference on what side of the gun. My Tamlong Tiger has the emitter in the mantlet and it seems to be more accurate than my Tamiya Panther with it mounted/clipped too the barrel.
