Maybe you could move the steering servo and cut a slot in the battery tray so you can insert the battery on its side. Then you'd have to figure out the linkage for the steering as well as the mounting for the servo. Maybe right on top of where it is currently and shifted as far as possible forward with the servo horn sticking up in the air?
