RE: Classic Pattern Event in Chicago...2010?
Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...celebrating "craftsmanship"!
The AMA Pattern NATS, used to also recognize fine craftsmanship AND great flying skill. One of my mentors won the award in the 80's with a basically all white T2A MK II. Doug Ferguson's execution was awesome! He used Monokote and had seams that were not able to be seen and covered the epoxy glass cowl with Monokote.
I brought the event back for the 2006 and 2007 NATS and involved Fly RC magazine, Thayer Syme (great guy!) to be the sponsor. The competitors liked the event and it provided recognition for those that did not "write checks" for their models.
The events allowed for "professionally built" entries because there is skill and imagination in the "collaboration" in crating a model. Maybe you built it and had someone paint and cover and you then installed the equipment. Maybe you had someone build it to your specifications, had someone build/paint it and then you completed the graphics and equipment installation.
Generally, the "best model" is selected...here are the details for the Chicago event:
