I replied to Darksheer but thought this might help others if they wanted to set up the 6EX.


OK, lets get started on the setup. How to do each of the settings on the transmitter is in the manual so I will not go into that but rather tell you what they need set to. All the other settings apart from the ones I mention below should be at default settings for the transmitter.

You need to get the transmitter set up for Mode 1. The good thing about the Futaba 6EX is it is dead easy to switch between the various modes. With the transmitter switched off hold both the Mode and Select buttons down together and switch the unit on. It will then come up with the STCK in the display. You need to set this to 1 using the +\- switch. Once 1 is selected switch the unit off again and you have set the mode. Switch it back on normally and then go through what I have put down next.

The next step is to set up one of the stores on the set for your Leo as the 6EX can save up to six sets of setups all for different models – I have different ones for my trucks and helis stored on my own one. The manual shows you how to pick a store and set the name for it so I won’t go into that here.

Once you have your store selected and named the next thing to do is set the dual rate settings for channels 1, 2 and 4 – channel three is the throttle so does not have this. Before you start doing this for each channel make sure that the D/R switch on the top front right of the transmitter is in the down position. Next go through channels one at a time setting them to 100% with the switch in the down position. You then need to move the switch to the up position and set each channel to 120%.

The next thing I did was set the end point adjustments on channels 1 and 4 to 120% leaving the rest at 100%.

The last thing that needs programmed on the handset is to set the Fail Safe to 50% - this is very important as it makes channel 3 go to the mid position which on the tank is neutral.

Next step is to plug the various leads from the DMD unit into the receiver. I don’t plug them in as the manual suggests as it means that channel 3 is not the throttle and the other things are a bit mixed up when using mode 1 but wanting the drive and steering on the right hand stick. What you need to do is put the leads from the DMD into the receiver in the following order:

DMD Receiver
J1 -ïƒ* CH1
J2 -ïƒ* CH3
J3 -ïƒ* CH2
J4 -ïƒ* CH4

That should be you installed ready to set the DMD up. Do this according to the Tamiya manual but it is important that you set the tank up with the D|R switch on the transmitter in the down position.


Once everything on the DMD is programmed you should be ready to go.

When you want to fire the gun or use any of the options that would need to have the trim switch moved on a standard (old type) transmitter you can push to D/R stick up and the gun will fire, machine gun go or lights work when you move the appropriate stick. When you want to disable the features and just run the tank or turn turret then with the switch in the down position the other bits will not work (eg no gun fire etc) The added benefit of having it set up as I describe is that if your battery fails in the transmitter or the tank goes out of range then it will just go to idle as the fail safe will kick in.
