RE: Comp ARF BAE Hawk build thread
Just joined this forum(about time I havehad my Comp-arf Hawk since Dec 09).Had my maiden flight last Sunday at local club scale day fly in(large grass strip). After watching a full size Extra 300 put on a superb aero display for us and then land on the strip Perry from Horizon Hobby UK said "there you go Phil if a full size can land here what are you worrying about" I could not back out after that comment even though there was up to 6 large scale planes in the sky at any time.Take off no problem but main winggear did not retract even though I pulled the switch at about 6 feet alt.did use full power though.Trim was OK just needed a couple of clicks of UP so flew round in smooth circuits to get used to the model at about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle. No problems handled very nice, after about 8 minutes decided to land ,gear all down ok ,full flap, nice approach but strong cross wind and down hill strip from right to left came in a bit too fast and bounced a bit taking off one of the gear doors otherwise no problems taxied back P120SX superb (Dave W thanks for all your help in set up).Decided to get to the bottom of this main gear retract problem, after flight gear retracted OK on ground still had enough pressure, so back home refitted gear door and fitted 2- 3mm x 15mm button head screws tapped into gear legs as others have done. Also fitted 3/8 in. leading edge balsa stock to innerfront of gear door to try and kill airflow to mimimize outward lift which counters air pressure.I will post some pics of mod later. After reading Daves previous thread I think my retract cylinder dia.are too smallat 18.50mm same as nose unit,I have looked at pics on Comp-Arf website and the Hawk sport grear main cylinder step up in dia out of unit and mine step down 1/2mm.Is this a later mod by Comp-arf?A larger cylinder/piston would make a big jump in air power.I have also added a second large BVM air cylinder to gear/door circuit as weighs nothing and there is plenty of room.Great model can not wait to get gear sorted so I can have some aero fun.
