Try draining the batteries a bit and try this over again. The big point you made earlier was that when you walked away from the plane, you said about 20 feet with the antenna all the way down, you lost reception. That concerns me, as it should you.

Draining the batteries a bit sometimes cures the servo jitter, but will do nothing for the range check.
