does horizon cover it if it isn't purchased through them? i bought it at my lhs

Agreed. If everything checks OK, then the most probable cause is the 5 in 1 board. I've replace 4 of them, 3 under warrenty from Horizion. Contact them and state your problem. If your still under warenty, they'll replace the board.
