I normally try to have nothing touch the receiver . I don't know if the esc proximity is having an effect or not.

It might be that you just have a bad receiver.

Always wait until the transmitter starts broadcasting before turning on the receiver.

Take the receiver out of the plane and try binding it on your work bench to check the installation.
