Are the original small steel bottles of CO2 the "Sparklets" from back in the day? If so, they are used now for charging wine cork removers, and can be gotten from most wine shops. The seltzer bottles of the 3 Stooges fame used these also, but the sources for that application likely are rare, like you say.
