Unusual, but in a combat area.a lot of ad hoc things happen with crews improvising on everything. Figure it would have been better to lay them on the side etc for addded protection...but who knows what the crew was going through. German tracks were not all that good and wore out at amazingly fast rate, so carrying more is understandable.
