If you're really looking to get in on the cheap then used 72mhz stuff is a steal these days. As said above, it still works as well as it ever did. But the 2.4 is where the hobby is going and if you're thinking about anything fancier than a 6 channel computer setup then go ahead and get the 2.4. The response is faster, the signal is more reliable, no interference, and the antennas are shorter so they are easier to mount.
