Default RE: Engine help for 1/4 scale Cub

ORIGINAL: roknHS

Something isn't right here.....Sig cubs are nothing but sticks, a few formers and covering.
How could a clipped wing cub weigh 19 pounds?? And.....a 26cc engine flying a 19 pound airplane is possible but, .......what a pig. You would be at stall speed all the way around the patch. Is your scale accurate?? I think you should re-verify your weight. If you are actually at 19 pounds then it must have 5 pounds of epoxy stuffed in there somewhere.

19lb airplanes usually run 40-50cc engines...........even cubs.

My hangar 9 cub has a Brison 40cc on it and its perfect.
Several large CUBs around this area ranging from the older Hanger 9 100", SIG and Balsa USA CUBs. All seem to be in the 15 to 17 pound range. 19 wouldn't be out of reach if a guy really detailed one.

I'm currently flying my older 15 to 16 pound Hanger 9 CUB with a DLE 30 and it seems to be the perfect combination. Plenty of power and almost unlimited vertical climb .... will easily do knife edge loops, etc. Flew the same plane before with a Saito 180 and a Syssa 180 .... the DLE easily outperforms either of these powerplants and still fits in the cowl without any side cutouts.

I have (2) Brison 2.4s but I'd think that would be a bit large and heavy for one of these CUBs. The DLE 30 comes very close powerwise though the 2.4 remains one of my favorite engines.
