For those not familiar with the Bruce Tharpe Engineering (BTE) Venture 60 (V60), it is similar to the popular SIG 4-Star 60. Bruce, prior to his departing SIG, designed the SIG 4-Star 40 and 4-Star 120, so there is a slight family resemblance to these, as well as the SIG 4-Star 60. (The 4-Star 60 was designed at SIG after Bruce had produced the V60). Personally, I prefer the looks of the Venture 60 to the 4-Star series planes. (And I recommend the optional wheel pants to enhance the looks). You can check out the web site www.venture60.com to see how I, and others, have styled their V60’s.
I purchased the Venture 60 as my second plane, and would recommend it to others who are ready to step up from their trainers. The only way to get this kit is directly from Bruce. The purchase price is $134.95 plus shipping and handling. Check out his web site at www.btemodels.com for details. It took about seven weeks from the time of my first phone call to Bruce to get my kit. He was out of stock and making the kits when I first called.
Specs:
Wing Span 72”
Length 54”
Engine 0.60-0.65 2 stroke, or 0.65-0.80 4 stroke
Weight 7.25 lb (design)
Wing Area 876 sq in
Wing Load 19.1 oz/sq ft
If you go to the web site you can download the assembly instructions. I did this prior to receiving my kit, and was thankful that I did. The instructions have numbered steps 1 through 60, but unfortunately, you must skip around at certain points. This is a minor annoyance, as the instructions are marked as to what to do next, but the steps should be in the correct order. The plans that come in the kit consist of a single rolled sheet.
As I said previously, this is only my second plane. I built a SIG LT 40 kit, and the knowledge gained with that plane helped to speed the construction of the Venture 60. None of the parts in the kit are labeled. This is intentional on Bruce’s part, in case you want to build the plane using transparent film. There is a complete parts list on the back of the instruction manual to help identify parts. I was glad that I had the experience of building the LT 40, I was able to identify the parts of this kit more easily than if it were my first kit. For example, if you don’t know what a sheer web looks like, you might find this kit a little overwhelming at first. But if you take your time and identify the major parts up front, then anyone can tackle this kit.
It only took me 2 weeks (weekends and evenings) to complete the building and covering of this kit. Granted, there was a 3-day weekend in there, and my wife was out of town for a few days. So don’t worry if it takes longer. I deviated from the instructions in a few places. First, the kit is supplied with #10 screws to attach the wheels to the landing gear. I found that these screws were too big to fit through the standard 5/32” holes in the Dubro wheels I used. I didn’t want to risk enlarging the wheel holes, so I used bolt on axles instead. This means that the wheel pant is not flush with the gear, but it’s hardly noticeable. The second difference is that I used 2 aileron servos instead of just one. The kit includes an extra instruction sheet on how to do this. But I used a slightly different method. I have a pocket that the servo sits down in whereas the instruction sheet has the servo mounted flush with the bottom of the wing. The third difference is that I moved the landing gear forward from the recommended mounting location. The plane really wanted to nose over when taxiing and taking off. I fly off grass so this might not be necessary for you, but I don’t think it will hurt you just in case. Plus it’s easier to do before the plane is completely assembled than after.
I chose to use a Tower Hobbies .61 engine for this plane based on the favorable reviews in Model Airplane News. I am not able to get unlimited vertical flight with this engine, but it will perform any standard pattern maneuvers. I am happy with the flight characteristics of this plane. I think that it is easier to land than my trainer, as it does not have a tendency to float. I’ve been very happy with this plane and would recommend it to anybody looking for their first low wing tail dragger.
( I would have included pictures but it's a pain to resize them. I'll put them in my gallery when we get that function back. You can see them at the Venture 60 site listed above)

Hi,
I too have built a LT-40 and I am currently building the Venture 60. You are right this plane is a hoot to assemple and experience with another plane is necessary. I am looking forward to flying it. I decided to go with transparent yellow and blue covering. Top Yellow and bottom blue. I will try and post something on the website when I am done. i chase the Thunder Tiger Pro 60 to power the beast. Have you heard anybody else using this motor? I particulaly like the fact that if I run into any problems with the kit I can call Bruce Tharpe directly for answers. I have had ARF's and Kits and if one has the time a kit is the way to go.
got to run... Happy flying!

Too Bad. His sales must have been too low to maintain. It was a great kit. I still have one in box with wheel pants and I'm sure we'll be seeing them on ebay for some time to come.

WHAT I HEARD WAS, THAT HE JUST WANTS TO MOVE ON TO OTHER THINGS, CAN YOU[&o] [&o]IMAGINE KITING THE SAME MODEL OVER AND OVER FOR YEARS...OH MT GOD , I WOULD GO NUTS. ALSO YOU JUST DONT SEE KIT BUILT MODELS AT THE FIELD LIKE YOU DID NOT ALL THAT LONG AGO! ARF'S HAVE TAKEN OVER IN MOST CASES. I WILL SAY THIS BRUCE THARPE MAKES THE BEST KITS I HAVE EVER SEEN OR BUILT. AND THERE IS A SPECIAL FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU BUILT THE PLANE WITH YOUR OWN 2 HANDS. THE PARTS ARE CUT AND SANDED TO SHAPE BY HAND ,,,NO LASER SCORCHING HERE .BAND SAW AND DRUM SANDER ARE THE TOOLS FOR MOST CUTS THE VENTURE 60 IS A FANTASTIC FLYER ,AND A FANTASTIC KIT ....SORY TO SEE IT GO ,[&o] I THINK I WILL JUST HANG ON TO MINE, AS IT IS SURE TO BE HIGHLY COLLECTABLE AS ONE OF THE BEST R/C KITS EVER PRODUCED!

I have one. It was my first kit build since I last built a control line kit in the late 60's or early 70's. For me, it took 4 weeks, nights and weekends to build and cover. With a Saito 91, I get nearly out of sight vertical. This plane is beyond a doubt one of the best flying planes I have. Now that he no longer kits these, I don't fly it too agressively.

I have a kit I am just starting. I am thinking of making it into a two piece wing to ease the transport. I re-made the internal wing ribs in light ply and am putting the wing tube just ahead of the main spar. My wing tube is 24 inches, I may need to shorten it due to the dihedral.
Has anyone else experimented with this? I hope it is strong enough. I love the simplicity of this plane.

Steve,
My rule of thumb is to always glue the wing center no matter what plane or wing it is. It will be the first place to give if it gets enough stress on it. Seeing how I've been trying to find one of these kits with no luck and they are not being made any longer, I wouldn't take a chance with it. Now with that being said, it sounds like it should work fine.
You wouldn't happen to know where there may be another kit lying around would you? Always gotta ask. A guy at our field has one that is already assembled that he would sale, but i want to make changes that are better done during assembly rather than after.
Thanks Shane

Hi Shane,
I see Bruce still offers replacement parts on his price list. you could buy a fuse and a wing etc. Have you tried to contact them about doing that?
I have a number of other things I am interested in building also, maybe I should just sell you my kit
Let me think on that one. i did not realize this was in such demand.

Steve,
Yeah I think that I bugged him enough about a Venture kit that he prob put me on a block email list.. Well maybe not quite that bad. But I have put up want ads and messages wanting one of these kits in almost every forum I could think of or find. Not sure how much they are in demand, I've just wanted one for a long time.
If you would sell me your kit you would be my new hero
My 4 star 60 was my first build 3 years ago and it is my favorite basher plane. I kept putting off getting the Venture until I lost the 4 star, but it is still going strong. In the matter of a week I was going to buy one then when I came back to the site I saw the news. Could not believe it.
You can email me if you like and we can discuss it. Until then here are a couple videos of a few of my planes.
