60 size protege trainer for AP .... with pics
I have a Carl Goldberg Protege trainer that I have rigged for AP. The big question is it has an OS 70 four stroke, is this engine large enough for this plane? I have a camera mount and sony 5mp dcs-p92 camera that weighs 12oz with mount and servo. I mounted the camera rig right at the CG point. I will post some photos later today. does this set up sound okay so far? Is it to heavy? I plan on trying it this weekend. I just copied this from Carl Goldberg..... PROTEGE ARF â„¢
Kit Number: 12058
Wingspan: 71.5"
Wing Area: 890 Sq."
Flying Weight: 7.8 lbs.
Fuse Length: 65.75"
Radio: 4-Channel
Power: .40-.60 2-Cycle
.65-.80 4-Cycle
CENTER OF GRAVITY
Balance Point on fuse,
measured back from
wing leading edge
4" to 4-3/4"
Notice the one bolt through the bottom of the fuselage... does that look okay to you? Just want your opinions.. thanks.

RE: 60 size protege trainer for AP
My Alpha 60 lifted a 6oz. Aiptek like it was not there. Your ability to lift is limited by your wing loading, not your engine. The engine will just determine how quickly it will lift off and perform once in the air. The Alpha 60 had over 900sq inches of wing surface if I remember correctly. My 1500 sq. inch GBS with 5 lbs. of AP gear does just fine.
On the CG is good so you don't have to rebalance or heaven forbid, add weight. The old timers around say that there is a reason airplanes are not made from lead.

RE: 60 size protege trainer for AP
Hello Savage,
I am sorry I can't offer you any help to your question, but I have just got an Alpha .60 that is very similar to your Protege that I am setting up for AP. I will be using a Canon PowerShot A550, an OSD and WiFi. All together I figure will add about 1.5 pounds to the plane. What I have read on other posts, including a fellow that has his Alpha .60 with 50% additional weight including pontons, and he says that a little slow and heavy, but has no problem lifting and handling all the extra weight.
I'd appreciate if you keep posting your findings/progress and I'll do the same so we can compare notes and see how it goes.
Cheers,
David.

I've been told you check the COG with the tank empty. It better be, because there is no way I can balance my Alpha .60 with a tank full!!.

You shouldn't have no problem. I have a Protege with Saito 72 and i can do allmost any aerobatic manuver including take off in 20m. it is a verry nice plane the only problem you may have is vibrations. Please post some videos of your flight, i wouldn't mind to see them.
Cheers!

okay it flys..or should I say I fly..first flight with a plane and did great! (I fly helis) here is a couple snap shots. I don't know what to do o correct it.. I packed it with foam as seen in previous shots. Do I leave lose and secure with rubber bands? Is it just the nature of 4 stroke? Is it the servo not doing the 1/2 shutter button thing? One thing for sure I need to mount it on the side of fuselage, I came in and bounced ever so gently and the gear flexed and the mount cracked the fuse floor.. epoxy will fix that! any thoughts on clarity?

Vibration is going to be a big issue. Yesterday I started my Alpha .60 for the first time, and I couldn't believe how much the whole plane vibrated.
Until now all I have flown are electric helis, and I would suspend the whole camera mount off rubber bands. I had no problems whatsoever with vibration as the rubber bands would absorb anything coming from the heli. Again it was an electric, but still rubber bands did their part.
Just in case I have ordered a conversion to electric kit from hobby lobby.
Weather is lousy lots of rain, so I won't be able to try my Alpha until next week, I am courious how the pics will come out now.

I just checked Hobby Lobby site and they have a bolt on conversion for the Goldberg Eagle 2...don't know the dimensions, but looks like a trainer as well. Here is the link in case you want to check it out.

A 4 stroke engine wil vibrate a LOT more than a 2 stroke. With a four stroke, you are generating almost the same power in half the strokes, so the 4 stroke power stroke is almost twice as "hard" as the two stroke. If you want less vibration, get a 2 stroke engine. I know a .70 four stroke in a .60 sized trainer would not make me happy. I would suggest a .60 sized two stroke like the Evolution .60 NX. The vibration issue can be easily solved by changing the hardness of the camera mounting. There will be hardness where the camera will resonate and shake like crazy, and you can also find mounting hardess where it will not shake at all. Its all a matter of experimenting and seeing what mounting results in a sweet spot.
Also try a test, kill the engine and take some pictures, make sure its vibration and not the plane just moving that is causing the picture to be blurry....
But more than anything, get a 2 stroke !

Finally had the time to post the Alpha .60 converted to electric. I really like the way it looks without the motor protruding so much. Now as far as how well it flies, it just does everything as the stock one did, but faster, easier and with plenty of power to spare, plus is clean!

Savage,
How are you tripping your shutter button? Do you have any close(closer) up pics of your mount?
1 more q... does it work to use the toggle switch on the radio to trip the servo? I assume everyone just uses their extra channel, like for retractable landing gear..?
Mine is cruder than yours. But it works.
I can only do video right now, of course I start the camera right after the plane's engine!
Here's my videos:

PS I also fly an Alpha 60.
Thanks,
Dan

Nice video savage. Maybe drop water balloons instead of rocks though. Safer.
