Tjaluba!
I´m currently renovating an old pylon racer and thinking about fitting only one aileron on the right wing panel. Have seen this concept occassionally on a few designs. Would appreciate input from you guys out there with some hands-on experience. Will not use it for racing but rather try to apply the KIS principle and minimize flutter potential for some fast "turn left" sport flying. Whaddayathink..??........./canardlover

Phil,
Single ailerons on the right sir! Here's the deal. In pylon, your banked nearly on knife before you pull on the elevator. The extra drag you mention on the outboard wing helps keep the nose up through the turn.
We have several guys who fly GLH's in our pylon races mostly with the single aileron on the right side. They fly pretty good. I tried the single once and didn't care too much for it. Airplane felt very sluggish to me. Maybe was my fault as my aileron was a little small. If you do the single thing use a full length aileron. My favorite aileron setup is dual 8"x3/4" hinged on top. This is on racers that are 200 sq. in. eight inchers are very smooth at speed and still have enough authority to manuver at landing speeds. Whatever you build, good luck to you......
rgds,
Jeff.....

Phil and Jeff, thank´s for your replies, I feel more confident now and will proceed with one aileron but make it full lenght on the right panel. Attach photo of current plane, she will be equipped with a piped MVVS .49 rear exhaust engine so I think she will be pretty quick.........Cheers/Harald

Canard Dude,
Hey! Nice looking racer. With a MVVS .49 I'm sure it will go... a lot of fun for a sport ship.
I have a glass fuse very similar to the one you have. Seeing yours makes me think about finishing it up.... Best Regards... Jeff...

Guys, just to let you know that the pylon ship has now flown successfully for a season with single aileron control and it works pretty well. Again, thanks for your support. Yes, she is a bit sluggish when rolling as you warned about Jeff but landings do not seem to be a problem even considering that I ended up with less than full lenght aileron(about 2 inches left solid in the tip) on the right side. With new paint scheme she looks like this..............;-)....Cheers/Harald

Hi Canardlover,
Can you post a larger photo of the plane in your avatar?
I must confess, canard setups fascinate me, and yours looks so simple!
Thanks, Mel

Thanks for the pics!
Too bad it is no longer. What contributed to the crash?

This one flew for a long time until a box full of books fell on top of it.....moving and fragile aircrafts dont go together!

Sure is tempting to blame the "dumb blonde" in the cockpit but the bitter truth is that it was all my own fault - pilot error again. I was chasing another guy over the field and made a high speed loop without throttling back. When coming out at the bottom I gave almost full up on the elevator to avoid contact with "terra firma" and the canard foreplane just folded/ripped off and down she went straight as an arrow at full speed(close to 100mph)....WHAMMM. I had to dig up the front engine from almost a feet deep into the soil. About the only thing remaining useable was the rear engine and tank. All servos and the receiver were gone, front engine became spare parts.
A new one is in the making and in fact again using single aileron control which is fitting in this thread..
Attach photos to show the new ship which has progressed quite a bit since they were taken. Maiden flight planned for next spring.A thinner wing and retracts to give even more speed.....
............Cheers/Harald
PS cappio - looks like a Cox 049 pusher - to bad about its demise..DS
