Is there an ideal elevator throw for performing elevator maneuvers?
I have a profile airplane and have about 55 degrees of elevator throw. When I chop the power and give full up elevator, the plane pitches up as expected, and starts to do a great elevator maneuver for about 5 seconds, then rolls left or right and goes into a spiral. Do I maybe need more elevator throw?

What are you trying to do?

probably not - lower wing loading and or a little aft shift in CG maybe.
Also - chop the throttle . the deep sinking maneuver works best with a short (low aspect ratio ) wing very low weight and about 45 degrees up and low or no thrust. If you are trying to hold the attitude under power you must use lots of rudder -instant correction to stop ANY yawing. It's a learned thing play with it - you will get it. |

I'm trying to do an elevator maneuver, where the plane sinks almost straight down while keeping a level attitude.

Then what is happening is an incipient spin. It can go either way, but depending on how straight the plane is it will tend to go one way more than the other. Once the attitude you want is established you have to increase power and control with rudder and elevator to maintain that attitude. (Vectored slipstream). Whether the model will climb or or descend will depend on the weight, control authority available, cg, wing A.R. etc. and the power available. Light, high powered models with large surfaces and movements can do this, others can't. Aileron use will probably result in that spin. Guess you are just going to have to go out and practise a lot...

1 Attachment(s)
I have a half dozen light flat foamies that will do this with no corrections needed
just chop poweradd full up and it's a perfect elevator all the way to the ground blindfolded , they will do it. However , the wing loadings are very low. |
RE: Is there an ideal elevator throw for performing elevator maneuvers?
Thanks, I think that my problem is not having any power on at all. I'm going to get out and try it with a touch of power and see how well it works then.

I would experiment simply first by adding more throw. Most trannys allow you to switch it in and out and then move the CG SLOWLY rearwards as it sounds too much nose heavy.
