Hi All,
Just swapped out the old engine in my Edge for an OS GT33 but no longer have the balance buddy. Does anybody know the recommend CG range in inches/cm from the leading edge?
Thanks!

I was wondering if the balance buddy from the 30cc Extra 300 is the same as the Edge 540? I put the DLE 35 on my Edge and it is REALLY nose heavy. I only have the balance buddy from my Extra to use. Also, at what point are you measuring the 4.5" back from the leading edge?

Just measure 4.5" from the leading edge either at the tip or, if you have CG machine, at the wing root. It has a straight leading edge so the point doesn't matter. I replaced the Syssa 30 in mine with an OS GT 33 which weighed 150g more (but much more power..) so moved the batteries (2 x 1100mah A123) from the motor box to being adjacent to the rudder servo and it balanced (and flew) perfectly.

Hey Mach2, im really sorry for the late late response!! But its never too late.
Yeah I bolted the DLE55 on that plane, its a crazy idea but here, Bogotá - Colombia (2600 mts above sea level), engines work at almost half its power. I also have a Pilot Rc Extra 300, witha a DLE 30cc and its just barely enough for it, basic aerobatics an deffinetly NO 3D or hover, no matter what you do. So i decided for the 55 and the plane its flying even better. Landings are touchy and unforgivable, any mistake its a new propeller for sure. I broke the original tailwheel, couldnt deal the extra weight. But for the rest, perfect. The main gear is fantastic, still intact.
With the 55 I got enough power to save me out while practicing hovers and torque rolls. Its been 8 months since its first flght and have no complaints.
It may fly a little heavy, if you push it to hard it will try to roll, but once you know it, you can deal with it. The knife edge its been the difficult one, im still fighting it level, but we all know the nose weight its a lot.
So far I love the plane, Ive improved a lot, learned a lot and most of all, I made a Gas transition with a crazy idea but its was totally worth it.

I forgot to tell you, in a previous post of mine there is a picture of the interior setup. you can see that I have the ingnition Battery aside of the Rx and regulator. But for the Rx Life pack I glued a plywood base far back on the fuse. That was the only way I could manage the CG. And it was perfect. Ocassionally I strap the batt a little further back for 3D manuvers.

No problem man. I know how things get with a busy schedule.
That's pretty cool you successfully mounted a 55 on her. And the bottom line is, it flies well, and you fly out well. A good combo, so it's all good. Keep it up. Great video production too.

Hi to All ... I'm just finishing up my AW 30cc 540 ... late to the party but I'm here. The good news about being late is that I get to see what everybody has done. My build is straight forward ... except that I chose a DLE 35RA from Valley View. The engine is awesome ... still running on the test stand. The only difference in mounting is that the bottom holes are at 80mm as opposed to 70mm and the ignition is good to go without a regulator. I'm running 2 2100mAh LeFe batteries from Duralite. From what I've read the 35 actually weighs a little less than the 30. So far (45 min) it cranks VERY easily and has smoothed out considerably. Has anyone else got comments on this combination? I saw earlier in the thread that someone was going to use the DLE 35RA ... The "Kit" is probably one of the best that I've ever seen ...Nick

I am powering my AW Edge 540 with a VVRC 40cc twin. I am nearing completion and will update on this combination. I am running Hitec 5645 servos, IBEC with A123 2300 mAh battery. I am using a VVRC 20x8 prop and will report on this combination soon.

This is an old thread that seems to have come back to life.. I have gotten my hands on an AW Edge 540 that the previous owner broke in half, I am told doing cartwheels down the runway. this is apparently a tough girl that can take a beating. Anyway I have repaired the airframe, installed DLE 30 side carb on it along with a mix of servo's, Align DS615 for the rudder and elevators and some HD's (forget which ones) for the ailerons and I must say it is much more fun to fly than the Hangar 9 Extra 260 I was flying. I have about 15 flights on her now and starting to get her dialed in.

They have a kit to move the carb to the rear. I know lots of people had problems with the side carb. Some lost planes due to being in a bad spot when the motor died on them. Just a heads up.

Thanks for that warning. I have been flying it without the cowl while I ran the engine in (some call it breaking in), I just mounted the cowl last night, I hope to fly it for the first time tomorrow after work. Funny enough I didn't find this thread until I had already put a dozen flights on her. I discovered I had to build 1.5" standoffs to move the engine out to the end of the cowl .. I thought it was odd how much nose weight I had to add, I am looking forward to flying her after removing the three pounds (embellishing for effect) of additional lead ..

Thank you very much for taking time to respond to my question. Removing unknowns adds confidence for the maiden flight that I plan for this Sunday afternoon. I am using a VVRC 40 cc twin and have balanced level using the balance buddy. The prop is a Hover CF 20-8. I will give you a report following the 1st flight Sunday afternoon.
