Default RE: 30cc Edge 540 build

I took some pictures of the muffler after I had to modify it to keep it from rubbing the cowl. I have some space now. I also attached the carb arm (It came from Wrong Way RC) He often posts on RCUNIVERSE and it was nice. Its fit to just go over the throttle arm and it is just the right length. Mine is 1", but you can get 3/4" one as well. I got it because on my last build, my throttle was very sensitive from the arm being short.

Next I made my own choke setup. I really don't like the looks of the zip tie set up, but I am sure it works out great. I thought this setup looks nice and its very light.

I posted some pictures of the tank being plumbed. I followed the instructions because it looked good and I think it works fine. If someone else has better ideas that feel free to chime in.

As you can see I am using Tenergy LIFE batteries (1700 milliamps each) I know its overkill for the ignition, but they weight only 3.2 grams each. I will decide where I want to put the reciever battery after I see where everything balances to get a good CG. My guess it will go in front of the tank near the firewall.

I went flying today...47 degrees with no wind...quite unusual for Colorado this time of the year, so I figured I should fly and not build. I also included a picture of the pants, they are nice and fit well. If you see anything you dont like or have suggestions let me know. Not much chatter on this build.

Take care

Brian

I think you are asking about when I fly it. Yes, if its nice in the next few weeks I will. Today was a big surprise...normally its in the thirties this time of the month.

It is the JTEC that is custom designed for AW.

I see why bemeson got a new throttle arm the one shown in the manual that comes with the motor will not install per manual (no clearance). I made a throttle arm out of a servo arm I also didn't see the need for a heavy hi torque servo on the throttle.

I also noticed the plane built in the manual doesn’t look like the same as the one there selling must be a prototype looks like the distance from the wing tube to the firewall is different and the lightening holes are different no big deal really just an observation.

Hey that looks great...I wish I would have thought about installing the servo on the side of the plane off the floor. I would not have had to drill such a large hole in the firewall. Nice work. I believe the plane in the pictures is the prototype. The engine box is shorter and some other small details. I think we will reap the rewards from the improvements that were made from the prototype. I have seen it in person and have seen the changes. It will fly nice, those guys routinely fly planes at our field and they fly great. You will not be sorry.

I am sorry there has not been much building going on in the thread lately, but I am working my last week at work before vacation. I wanted to give you guys some update on the Tru Turn Spinner issue. I spoke with Mark at AW and he told me that they have a very nice Carbon Fiber spinner in and its 49.99. I told him that I was unhappy with the Tru-Turn and he told me to pack it back up and he would take it back. Gotta love that kind of customer service!

I went down to AW today and picked up the spinner. Its a very nice piece and it will look awesome on the little plane. I will take some pictures of it on the plane for you all to look at. I think its shape will compliment the shape of the cowl. You all can judge.

I hope to work on the little plane this weekend and I will post some pictures later. I will see Mark from AW this weekend at the field. If you have any questions, I will be happy to get you some answers. I am hoping I can steal some flying tips from him....he can fly the wings off these planes...I can only hope someday I can do the same.

Take care

Love to see some pics of the spinner installed when you get it. I thing thats the way I would like to go also.

I have made little progress also, I installed all servos and setup throws nothing picture or note worthy.

Hey Guys,
I am attempting to install the RC excel opti kill switch on an Aurora 9 radio on a 9 channel reciever. I plugged the long lead into the reciever into channel 7. I then activated channel 7 on my radio on swith H. I then ran the reciever battery into the EMS switch. The port out of the switch plugged into the port on opti kill. Next the lead out of the opti kill went to the lead into the ignition. I can not get the led light to light on the opti kill when the switch is on and the switch is toggled on the radio. What gives. I have never used one of these before. What am I doing wrong.

Thanks
Brian

Bemeson - some newer receievers have too low of signal voltage on certain channels to run the switch. Try plugging the receiver lead into a different channel, maybe channel 5 might make it work.

I am getting pretty frustrated with the opti kill. I plugged a servo in the port to see if the switch is working which it was. I have tried several different attempts at getting the thing to work but to no avail. I guess its possible the thing was a dud from the get go, but I doubt it. I tried several different ports on the reciever and it also did not work. The plane is done, I just have to balance it with the great tool from AW called the buddy balancer. I will let you all know how it works and take some pictures when I do it. I may fire up the engine tomorrow as well. If any of you guys have used an Aurora 9 radio with an opti kill, please post away cause I am fresh out of ideas.

Take care

Bladebender,
I am using a 1700 life battery running to a EMS switch. Out of the switch it runs into the opti kill. Out of the opti kill connects to the lead into the ignition. The long lead out of the opti kill goes to channel 8 on my reciever.

I have checked the to make sure the programming is working through my radio by hooking a working servo up to the channel prior to connecting the opti kill and the servo works perfectly. The EPA on the radio is set to max.

I have disconnect the opti kill for right now and I will attempt to start the motor and get it tuned. When I get that area covered I will go back and play with the opti kill. Ohh by the way its impossiple to flip the wires because they have the futaba tang on the lead inserts. I may play with it later, but I screwed around with it for at least three hours the other day. Also this is the RCXL brand opti kill and not the 42% brand.

Sorry it took so long to post....It was 50 plus degrees in Colorado today, so I took the trusty Giant Super Sportster paired with my first DLE30 out for some flying time. This may have been the best day of flying I have had in CO in December in my entire life. NOT any wind and beautiful.

Also Mark from AW was a no show, so no film of the 540 edge in action.

See ya
Brian

The batery is a two cell life with a single b lack and single red wire

I have not hooked up a 4.8 battery but I can try that

A picture would be great. I will try tomorrow to hook mine up again and send you a picture as well

Thanks a ton for you help

Thanks for all the replies on how to fix the opti-kill it appears as the unit was DOA. I have attached a bunch of pictures of the plumbing. Just of information...I used the AW buddy balancer to check CG and compared it to my stadard Dubro balancer. The AW one was spot on and much simpler and cleaner to use. That is why they call it a quick build. The tool was awesome.

As you can see both of my batteries are up front to get a slightly nose down CG. If I placed the receiver battery just ahead of the reciever and just behind the wing tube it balanced perfectly level. I chose to make it just a smidge nose heavy for safety on the initial flights.

I attached a photo of how the buddy balancer attaches to the plane.

Default RE: 30cc Edge 540 build

I figured I would post some updates on the DLE motor that is going to power this beast. I have another DLE 30 in a Giant Sportster that has been ultra reliable and trouble. free.

First I filled the tank and checked to make sure I did not have any leaks and the clunk moved freely. Next I attempted to prime the fuel line by turning the prop with the ignition off, choke on, and throttle at max. I noticed that I was not getting fuel to the carb, so I pulled the top cover off the carb (its attached with 4 phillips head screws) I pushed the button in the center and I immediately noticed now that the fuel had come all the way to the carb. This is a common problem with brand new DLE motors. I screwed the cover back on, switched on the ignition, choked the carb, placed the throttle at one click above idle, and flipped the prop two times before it popped.

I then turned off the choke and began to flip the prop....wha la live after three flips of the prop...just like a DLE. I then let it run for several minutes to let it warm up. After several minutes, I got it to idle around 1600 to 1700 rpm and it peaked at 7800 rpm with a slight burble still present in the mid and top end. The transition was good. The prop I used was a 19X8 Xoar that had been previously balanced both at the tips and the hub.

I ran a tank through it and then I wanted to check the tail wheel to see if it had nice ground handling. Yea the tail wheel worked, but the plane will not stand still at idle. I guess a 10.5 pound plane at 1600 rpm was too light for that prop. I am going to have to reevaluate my prop choice for break in.

I am not sure if I will go to a 18X8 or a 20X6. I kinda like it when a plane remains motionless at idle.

I am going to elloborate on the Balance Buddy that AW provides in the kit. This thing is cooooool. Setup was quick and its accurate. I can't believe someone has not thought about this little gadget sooner.

Well enough of this dribble....next big day will be maiden day. One last note on the opti kill...as of right now I am using a switch on the radio to turn the throttle down to kill the motor. I will get a new one later in the week and experiment with it later.

Take care
Brian
