RE: Aero Works P-51?
Hi All,
I am new to this site and I am very interested in purchasing the AW Mustang. I've read all postings but could not find any info on the retracts. Can someone tell me what brand retracts are used on the AW Mustang. Also, I have a JR 9503 and would like to know what most of you guys are using to compensate for the additional channels needed.

I also have the same problem with the tailwheel.I already talked to Kim twice,he did not have a cure but suggested cutting some of the elastic bands.I really don't like that idea because the tailwheel doors won't close all the way.I polished the two legs that open the doors to a chrome like finish and it helped.I think if the arms were pushing closer to the center it would work a lot better.Anybody got any other ideas on this problem?

RE: Aero Works P-51?
Aeroworks used Robart retracts on the prototype aircraft and did not like them. Aeroworks told me they designed their own. They resemble the robarts in respect to the locking channels for the up and down position. The gear legs and gear door cover attachment points and the machined components are far and above the robart brand. I did look up a sierra brand retract that looks very similar to the one on the p51. I have not flown the plane yet, however, in the shop they work fine other than I had the problem with the tailwheel gear door elastic hampering the tailwheel from going down. Myself and anther person resorted to cutting about 1/3 of each band to get the gear to drop properly. In the retracted position the gear doors do not close thightly, but Russ from California says it is not noticeable when the plane is in the air. The only other thing I can think of trying is to go to a fabric shop and experiment with different sizes of elastic. I chose to use the above method and live with it. I did try and bend the arms that open the doors so they would get more leverage at the center of the doors and it worked but then they didn't hold the gears doors far enough apart to allow the tailwheel to retract without catching on the gear doors. I guess it amounts to how much experimenting you want to do and what you are willing to live with. If you find something that solves both ends of the problem, please post it.
Thanks, Bruce

The retracts are our own brand and have been working very well. We have any and all spare parts you may need for them in the event of a mishap just like all the other parts for this plane.
The 9503 will work but you will need to use a matchbox of some sort for the flaps. I would recommend this one: [link=http://smart-fly.com/Products/EqualizerII/equalizer.htm]Equalizer 2[/link]

Thanks all,
I am glad to hear that the units are not Robarts as I've heard they have reliabilty issues. I pulled the trigger andordered my AW Mustang yesterday. Now Ijust have to wait for the shipper! Stay tuned... asI'm sure Iwill have tons of questions for you experts

Well, I've been trying to get some in-flight pictures, but apparently the guys I fly with are NOT very good photographers!!! I keep getting the tail or wingtip of the plane!! Oh, well, I'll keep trying, but to get you guys excited about finishing your own, I'll post a picture on the runway. Darn new job is keeping me from flying.

RE: Aero Works P-51?
I continue to have an issue with the tail wheel gear doors. I've been leaving them taped back in an effort to help elongate the material. Another potential problem is the capacity of the air tank as it takes only a couple of cycles before dropping from over 100 psi to less than 60 psi. I've added a second tank.

RE: Aero Works P-51?
efly,
I too added a 2nd tank for the very same reason. I might still change it out and put in a larger one, they weigh almost nothing and the added security would make me feel better. I've checked with a guage and it seems to take about 10 lbs of pressure per cycle and the mains get pretty slow coming up anything under 60lbs. Tamjets makes a landing gear failsafe that lowers the gear at whatever pressure you set and I am probably going to add one of those. Really don't want to have to repair a belly landing! I have the door sequence set to lower the gear 1 second after the doors open, wait 9 seconds then close. Same with up - doors open, 1 second, gear up, 9 seconds doors close. I like giving the gear time to get out of the way of the doors as not to cause problems. The tail wheel doors are doing the same thing as yours, but in flight it doesn't seem to as big of a problem as sitting static. Possibly the vibration of the engine helps open the doors??? If you notice when you try in the shop and the tail wheel hangs up, just tapping the plane will usually get it to come out all the way. I've been ok so far, but I always fill the air just before each flight (do that with all my planes that have retracts) and usually only cycle the gear once or at the most twice per flight.

Would you guys happen to know where to get another air tank the same size as the 350cc tank that's in the plane now? I've looked but can only find the Robart's.

RE: Aero Works P-51?
Fuse is covered and I am installing electronics. I found a really nice portable aircraft stand at a local hobby shop made by a local guy for $50 bucks. Works perfect.
I got the tail wheel, rudder, pushpull wires, and elevator completed last night. Now that we have it covered things should go pretty fast.

Tail Wheel Door fix
After reviewing several post about problems with the tail wheel doors we decided to try something different. We moved the attachment point to the middle of the doors and ran the elastic band through the holes under the tail wheel strut. We also attached two hardwood blocksand screws for the elastic band. After several cycles it seems to work great. It actually helps bring the tail wheel down instead of fighting the elastic to open and closes with very little effort.
When retracted the doors close and seat very nicely.
It also eliminated any bumping of the tail wheel strut to theleft door during retraction.

Hi Condor,
Thanks for the fix! Will give it a try. Still interested in how your kelo exhaust lines up for cutting the cowl out and if you have to make a exhaust pipe cover that goes over the pipes from the outside of the cowl.
Best regards, Bruce.

RE: Aero Works P-51?
After much discussion I think we have come to the conclusion that the AW mustang cowling will need seperate manifolds for the exhaust system. Keleo has the fuse and cowling to mock up a set for me. It will have a header with flex pipe attaching to manifolds mounted to the cowl. The guys at AW had a great idea about seperating the cowl into two halves. Top and bottom. It would seperate at the line on each end of the molded exhaust pipes. I think it will also give me better access and make it much easier to work on the engine.

RE: Aero Works P-51?
Since we are using the DA 85 with the Solo Prop 26 inch 4 blade we needed to think about P factor with the torque involved with this setup. I found an article in RC Modeler mag that discussed using weights in the right wingtip to compensate for this. The formula was take the cubic inch of the engine (lets say an OS 46) and double the ci to come up with the proper oz weight to counter act any effects of the spinning prop.
For example, if you use an OS .46 you would need .92 oz in the right wingtip. We have tried this in 4 different aircraft with an OS 46, OS 60, OS 120 and a Quadra 42. It worked perfectly. We took each aircraft to the point of a stall and allow the planes wheels to touch the runway (kind of a touch and go maneuver) and go to full throttle. Each aircraft reacted the same way. No rudder or aileron inputs were added and each aircraft left the deck level or within 10 degrees of level flight.
The one thing we did notice was after installing the counter weights, every aircraft had to be re-trimmed during flight. 3 of the 4 aircraft we re-trimmed had the ailerons and rudder back to neutral position after the weight installation. Thought that was pretty cool.
We have decided to do this with the AW mustang. We melted 10oz of lead and poured in into the right wingtip. We then finished the job with epoxy and micro balloons. If the same holds true for this setup (and we have no reason to believe it won't) we should eliminate a very large degree of the mustangs high throttle low speed tendency to want toroll over on its back.

RE: Aero Works P-51?
So how does it go for loops?
THe large engine gives you to option to fly truely scale....IMHO....
You can go slowing up into verticle and still excelerate if need to to make the loop....
IF you used a small engine, you would have to fly WOT all the way up to the loop and threw it.....
Doesn't look as scale.....
Big planes Look as though they flying slow, and floaty....
Good luck with your install...
Look forward to the end result...
VIDEO PLEASE!
