I'm fortunate enough to live and work near the USAF Museum, plus I spent more than my fair share in books and movies (and library books).

When I was in elementary I bet I could name off and recognize a large majority of military and civilian aircraft ever made.

But i have no idea what fuselage that thing is WhoDaMan!

LOL! You expect me to identify a half built aircraft with a top view only. Sheesh! It appears to be an SU-27 Flanker. The wing roots dont look quite correct though. Only plane I can think of that has a stinger like that.

WhoDaMan that's the F-84H Thunderstreak (I think it's the H lol, or something, I'll look it up later). The very last of the rocket propelled interceptors, this one with a mixed powerplant of a sustaining jet engine, with a rocket under the jet exhaust nozzle. On the third test flight the rocket engine had to be used because the jet had failed. The second planned firing of the rocket nearly blew the entire tail off the plane. Luckily the test pilot was uninjured.

My favorite is the F-84 modification where they put the turboprop on it. Another hilarious read in the book, The World's Worst Aircraft by Bill Yenne.

Hah OK, OK I got them mixed up.

That is the XF-91 Thunderceptor. The details I described are the same. By the way the wing of the 91 had inverse taper, ie. it got wider near the tip. Looked really weird but apparently from test pilot's reports it worked moderately well in keeping roll authority during a stall, and this plane needed all the help it could get!

The XF-84H is the turboprop powered monstrosity I mentioned earlier (and incidentally one of the noisest aircraft EVER made).

ORIGINAL: Hossfly

Here's the answer;

There were 487 of these machines built . The picture and 3 Views is of a captured L2D3, the most of the variants -- L2D2, 3, and 4 -- built. The machines were built in 1940-44, 71 being built by Nakajima, and 416 by Showa, in the Empire of the Rising Sun.
They did create some very bad times as they hauled troops and cargo around the empire during WWII as most fighters ignored those "DC-3s"

BTW the L2D3 had 1300 HP Kensi 51 radials and was a bit higher in performance than the DC-3. Allied Code name, "Tabby"

Thanks to Rene Francillon's Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War US Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, MD for these tidbits of information.
WOW!! never knew that-[sm=thumbup.gif]
