RE: Race?
The way I understand it these birds use a fuel of low volatility to take off so they don't blow up do to the fuel leaking out of it on the ground.
It looks like fuel vapor in the backround instead of heat waves.

RE: Race?
The SR 71 leaked by design. By the time it reached altitude the heat generated by the friction of the air over the airframe expanded the skin enough to seal it. Any jet fuel that was available could be used. (ie, JP4, Jet A, Jet B, JP8) There are some performance changes based on fuel, but they are usually minimal. It's heat waves behind the airplane.

RE: Race?
A friend of mine flew one. It had 3 ways of getting away from missiles shot at it from the ground. None ever got hit. The only damage they had done with them is one ran over the bolts from an exploded missile, but just put holes in it. It is a very cool bird. I got to preview a video that my friend did for the company before it became more known as to what it could do. Quite the bird.

Come to Seattle and see two magnificent airplanes. The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. The SR 71 and the Concorde are both on display. Here's the link: www.museumofflight.org
