I just recieved two Earnest K Gann books in hard cover. Fate is the Hunter and The High and the Mighty. This guy could put you in the cockpit 1,500 miles from nowhere over the pacific with a few written words.

Nobody will ever top Ernest Gann, But Antoine deSaint Exupery has him in a tie.
Other good ones: John Ball's Last Plane Out. Or any John J. Nance. Or...
