Default New version of Skyhook

Advances on Fulton Skyhook.

How many have seen the Fulton Skyhook idea, There is a new possibility to pick up downed fliers etc.

Dr Pavel Trevaillo of Melbourne Uni' is experimenting with the Nate Saint idea. Nate Saint flew in tight circles with a long tether hung from the aircraft. With sufficient length of line the tether remains stationary as the aircraft circles. Saint is a missionary from the Missionary Aviation Fellowship and used it to contact Woadani people by lowering a basket of goodies to them. The basket remained sufficiently still for them to remove the goodies and replace them with gifts, he was then able to reel in the basket. This was done in the 50s.

Travaillo is experimenting now, he has been testing the concept with an RC aircraft of about 6' span. The plans are to go further with a larger model and more electronic controls.

See New Scientist 30 April 05.

It would certainly be easier on the 'recoveree'. The Fulton Recovery was a 10 G skyrocket ride. I've watched several; looks like either the biggest rush of your life, or absolutely no fun at all. Your choice.
