I installed my radio yesterday into my 47" Extreme Flight Yak. Binding was easier than I thought. I didn't realize that you only have to bind once. That will make it easier when mounted in profile planes. When setting up the plane, I just scrolled down on both the RD8000 and RDS8000 changing the settings on the RDS.

I just wanted to post my personal update. I sent My RDS8000 in for service on Wednesday the 3rd & I had a new radio back on Saturday the 6th. That works out to a same day turn around for the service department.. I challenge any company (Futaba, JR, Hitech) to try and match that type of customer service its just not going to happen.. WAY TO GO MIKE you guys are amazing!!!!

All the big four radio manufacturers have outstanding reputations for customer service here in North America. I've only heard good things about Hitec, JR, Futaba, and Airtronics service. Hitec RDC is routinely praised for fast and friendly customer service. Hobby Services does a terrific job providing warranty support for all of Hobbico's brands. Horizon Hobby is frequently praised by happy customers here on RCU as well.

To Airtronics' credit, many long time customers were concerned about the new distribution deal with Global Hobby until it was learned that the same technicians would be retained for customer service. Great products combined with a great service organization is always a winning combination, and Sanwa/Global Hobby is just such a combination.

If you buy a radio system from any of major manufacturers and have a warranty issue, great customer service and fast turnaround times should be a given. That having been said, I'm glad you got your replacement RDS8000 so quickly!

This may be a question that only Mike G. can answer, but I'll throw it out for general discussion. Yesterday when doing some control rigging I had the transmitter laying right next to the fuselage (TX antenna probably no more than 6" from RX antenna). Occasionally the servos moved just a bit when I wasn't touching the transmitter. Watching carefully, it appeared that my servos were temporarily moving to the "fail safe" preset positions. Within a second or two the servos would return to normal neutral, so I never had a chance to wiggle the sticks to see whether I was locked out.

Is it possible to swamp the RDS by having the TX too close to the airplane? When I moved the TX a couple of feet away from the airplane the phenomenon seemed to go away. This was a common occurrance in the old days of single channel and even early digital proportionals.

Anybody else have this experience?

Yeah I've installed this radio system on 2 planes so far - super easy installation (directions give great example on how to mount the antennae at 90*). Only 2 little wires vs. the master-slave Rx system that the other guys are using, so no clutter in the fuse. Very easy binding process, have not had to repeat binding for either plane yet. Also, no special tool or unplugging of wires is necessary to bind the Rx to the Tx.

Very nice product from Airtronics.

To Mike Greenshiels,
I just purchased the RD8000 2.4 and started to program and convert all my aircraft. The first thing I wanted to do was to name all my airplanes with the 3 character naming
function. I followed the manual instructions on page 28. After pushing the function button twice the NAM did not come up. After trying a few things I tried taking it out of the basic
menu and it worked. The manual leads you to believe it should stay in the basic menu and even has a picture of it.
Should the NAM come up in the basic menu or is my particular radio not configured right?

Thank you, Dave Z

DaveZ,
I know you asked Mike, so did I above, but I dont think he reads this thread on a regular basis. I was courious about what you wrote so I took my RD6000Super and my RDS8K and checked them both out and NAM is only part of the Advanced list of functions. Its only when you say "Basic" NO does NAM come up two clicks away from the top of the menue.

Hope this helps

Johnny

Ps - Look at page # 7 it shows a list of Basic on and Basic off programs. NAM is under Basic off jds
Ps- I see what your saying about the pic showing "Basic" in the screen. Page 21 of the RD6Super manual shows the same screen correctly NAM with no basic in the screen shot. Minor error. jds

Servo Question

Are Airtronics digital servos programmable and if so can they be programmed with a Hitec digital servo programmer?

I'm pretty sure that Hitec digital servos can be programmed with a Hitec digital servo programmer. Perhaps you could use those with the RDS8000?

The Hitecs are programmable. I use them now 5245s and 5125s. The vibration from a pylon racer kills the little metal gears in them especially the 5125s. I plan on trying the mini Airtronics digitals to see if they stand up better. Not good that they are not programmable.

Just got my first Airtronics radio. An RDS8000FHSS! Have been mainly a Futaba user for many years. I never thought I would go with Airtronics. But with the complaints about heat with the Futaba receiver, and voltage with the Spektrum units, I chose the RDS8000. It looks pretty well designed, and programming looks simple. Can't wait to install it, and see how I really like it.

When I bought my RD8000 a couple of years back, I didn't like the smooth throttle at first. Now I can't stand a ratcheting throttle. You might give it a try for a while and see if you like it smooth.

there are some guys i fly with that flip the little clicker over to make it totally smooth. i used to hear complaints that to hover their plane, the throttle needed to be between the clicks.. the rds8k is pretty smooth as it is compared to my other tx's.. smooth is better IMOP

Why no duel rates/expo on a 8 channel radio. Even the 6 channel futaba has this. This is the only thing that's kept me from buying this radio.

Yes, it is only the rudder channel that doesn't have dual rates or expo. But, it is possible to mix the rudder with one of the aux channels to give it dual rates if needed.
