I read your post perfectly. The rule is there to protect the interests of the AMA and the interests of the club. If the pilot on the buddy box never joins the AMA, what purpose does it serve? Can that pilot (Non-AMA) join your club?

Some fools actually believe in the AMA Mission Statement. Laughable, isn't it?
The rule has nothing to do with safety and AMA has no interest as an insurer. Being an insurer is the only 'authority' AMA has to enforce their rules, i.e., the threat of voiding the insurance coverage they provide, and none is provided to the non-member on the buddy box. Any surprise that this is the least respected rule that AMA has on the books, and the most widely ignored?
The topic has come up many times in the forums, and the consensus seems to tend toward the opinion offered by Al Gunn. A proposal was made via the published protocols circa 2004 to eliminate the one-time-only clause. D-X VP put it on the EC agenda, but prior to the start of the quarterly meeting in Muncie, he discussed it with then Pres D Brown. It was removed from the agenda and the EC never got to consider it.
You like rules........where is the rule written that says the AMA president has the power to preemptively veto a change proposal prepared for EC action in accordance with the bylaws?

Frank has a point...we shouldn't discuss/argue merits about rules of AMA...just submit our individual and singular ideas via the proper AMA channels so they can be dismissed properly...Makes thing a lot easier for everyone... no conferring within the ranks...that causes trouble.

Arguing about the rules as they are written accomplishes nothing.

This is absolutely ridiculous now. A question has been asked and the answer has been given. Nothing was asked about intent, what the AMA goals are, who is or is not insured, or any other tangent of the original question. If you want to discuss those off shoots of the original question then please start a new thread.
Since many here simply can't leave well enough alone and want to try to drag something simple into a mud slinging excersize I'm going to nip it in the bud and simply close down this thread.
