If you want to make money, you will have to fly by the FAAsUAS rules, whenever they come out. If you want to have fun, you will have to fly by the FAA/AMA model airplane rules, whenever they come out. Either way you can be legal, but these seem to be the only choices for the future, whenever that happens. Right now, the safest and apparently only option is to fly by the existing AMA rules.

According to a recent update on DOT’s Rulemaking Webpage the projected publication date for the small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) has been pushed back to July 2012. Though this has not yet been confirmed by the FAA Unmanned Aircraft Program Office (UAPO), sources close to the office say that the rule still resides at the Office of the Secretary of Transportation (OST) and at this point it’s anybody’s guess as to when the NPRM will be published. My guess is that recent provisions in the FAA reauthorization bill in regards to the commercial and public use of UAS, as well as model aircraft, have created the need to revisit several portions of the proposed rule.

Though the delay in the release of the NPRM is unfortunate, the advent of the sUAS rule is inevitable. Check back often for the latest news and updates on the sUAS rulemaking process.

So true. Although I, personally am not concerned about the sUAS rules as I don't expect them to affect me. I intend to fly by the AMA rules and so I am waiting for them to be published and acknowledged by the FAA.

What he is doing there
is to declare AMA to be a congress protected CBO exempt from the regs they are fighting,
and makes no attempt to recognize that other organizations based on community
even exist as to get PL112-95 protections as well

Given how a terrorist was arrested for trying to add bombs to models,
I for one REALLY HOPE the dhs IS already (and has been for a while) aware of the hazards of terrorists using models. I hope them Gmen are doing their job and keeping us safe. Of course, we can celebrate that when the purpose of operation is other than hobby/recreation then that craft is no longer a model... so no actual models can be operated for the non-recreational bombing of people... that thar is a Civil UAV not a hobby model

Hey Poxy: If you remember correctly The Mad Islamic Boomer from Mass. Was aided and abraded by the FBI. They glorified his
IED Detonator making, suggested he use C4 instead of Grenades, acquired the fake C4 for him, & Financed the Model Jet for him. The Government did more than he did.

Wouldnt that lead you to believe the government is already well aware of the possibility to use sUAS as weapons?
Not to mention the bunches of sUAS being developed for DoD explicitly AS weapons for our team.

So I just dont consider

as valid.

I hope they DO know how dangerous sUAS can be, and protect us.
And it seems they already are.
They managed to protect us, preventing the attack, WITHOUT grounding all toy airplanes,
and the senate voted UNANIMOUSLY (without letter campaign) to exclude toy airplanes from FAA regulation.
The gov knows sUAS are a potential weapon, and they unanimously protected us toy airplanes
