A little over a week ago the FAA announced a contract with an international company call ANRA for a demonstration project to collect broadcast Remote ID signals using drones and ground-based receivers to forward them onto a USS network. So network didn't go away it will just be in the background if it pans out (in 10 years). At least we won't have to pay for it.
