The AMA no longer issues instant memberships because of an incident that happened about a year ago. It normally takes about a week or so to get your card.
The only exception is when you sign up at a sanctioned event and buy a membership from the Contest Director (CD).

The incident wasn't the proximate cause of the change in policy. Dave Brown's (and no one else's) knee-jerk reaction to it was.

Agreed, however the "fix" was agreed to by HQ and the EC with the advise of counsel in there somewhere.

DB's accomplishments need wider recognition if he is to win the office of CIAM President. AFAIK, I was the first to publicly announce in this forum my support of him for that office, and so far as I've seen I'm still the only one. He could use a couple more buddies.
Go Dave Brown!!!!..........................................please

What do you mean "knee jerk"? I thought the change in policy was reasonable considering the implications. The only problem *I* had with it (and its biggest and worst aspect) is the unfriendly way we began to treat modelers. The problem seems to be your friends, the lawyers, treat everyone that way. . .

The $10-12 per year that goes to the AMA insurance kitty for each member could easily be covered by a small reserve to give the benefit of doubt to some few poor saps that have glitches with their credit account or inadvertently overdrew their checking account. I'd be happy to put up the 58 bucks out of pocket, if AMA can't afford the risk, to cover the next guy that applies and has a funding glitch, rather than have DB assume he is a felon and have AMA reject his application or renewal.
If I got the story wrong, I'll certainly listen while sombody sets it straight.

Abel,
I am sure your sources are similar to mine, and reasonably accurate as to the facts of that particular watershed case. However, I am not sure you have the right 'guilty' party. I have a serious problem putting this all on the shoulders of Dave Brown. I very strongly suspect that he has had a lot of help with this one, and that is what we NEED to change.
Let me put it another way for clarity. While I am sure DB has done some things many are unhappy about, I cannot recall when the AMA trusted modelers, can you? From my perspective this has been a long term problem, not just something that happened to show up when the going got hard for our association.
Couple this with some politrician's attempt at keeping the operations of our organization secret (like the D8 DVP - as HE STATED this month in MA - for example) and the mushroom farm in Muncie is growing daily.
