Could it be that Eric just didn't get his article in by the publication date? That's happened before.

You actually read the magazine? I usually give up once I hit the (never-ending) (massively-dull) free flight section. Surely the technology used by this lot isn't changing quickly enough that they need ten pages every month to discuss it!

AMA didn't take out the section. But if there is nothing submitted, then nothing can be printed.

Give Eric at Helipros a call and ask him why he can't turn a short article in on time. He's the one responsible for that.

I hear ya visioneer. I think the mag is crap. Bunch of old timers with the free flights and control line. Sure there are jets, and helis, but then there is control line scale, control line racing, control line aerobatics, blah blah blah.

If you live in District 10. Free flight is all that gets reported, also.

Wow. You guys are a tough group. Before there is a lot of discussion about the AMA, there should be some required reading. The AMA by-laws, the minutes for the past year or so of the EC (oops, thats the Exectutive Council, to those of you that don't know) and maybe some of the IRS code.

A newsletter is required under the IRS status (501 (3) c) that the AMA has. The magazine, Model Aviation, meets that requirement. With the help of some advertising, it cuts the cost of your membership. Now, a 501 (3) c status is an educational status. It allows some special tax advantages. One of the requirements of that non-profit status is to educate you. Yeah, you, the members of the AMA.

If you actually read the magazine you might pick up some tips on building or maintaining a model, as well as rules changes, safety code changes, etc, etc. Keep in mind that most of the R/C stuff was derived from free flight. You can find good information in most of the articles.

I suppose they could eliminate the mag. Your dues might go up just a tad. Is that what you all prefer?

If this forum is going to exist, it is going to take some effort for those of you that post. You either need to ask questions, or have the knowledge to answer them.

Can someone specifically outline their reasons for displeasure with the AMA? I just don't understand the grief. It would also be helpful to hear about some suggested solutions.

Thanks,
Mike

Default Model Aviation

I think the Name of the Mag. explains it all. It is not R/C aviation or giant scale aviation , it is Model Aviation, Because the AMA is the Academy of MODEL AERONAUTICS. Therefore it covers ALMOST all areas of Model Aviation from Auto Gyros to Zeppelins . I can't believe so many people could be so closed minded not to accept the fact that other areas of the hobby need to be covered as well as R/C, I read the articles even though I don't participate in that area because I love and respect all forms of this hobby and can't say that any one aspect is better than another. I fully congratulate the AMA for putting out a nicely diversified Magazine, I have received the other Catalogs that call themselves a Magazine and have not been impressed . I don't think it is fair to M.A. to tell others it is Crap because you can't see the value of its content. What ever happened to having a little respect for other areas of the hobby. If you want more content of your interest you are more than welcome to submit articles to review products, to your VP for the news letter, Pics of your aircraft , etc. and if it has any merit and is written somewhat well it may just get printed.

Default AMA

Hello Mike

There are all kinds of little gripes that people have, Some don't like the fact that the AMA built a large , very impressive , very expensive office building , Museum and flying site to represent or organization , some would rather we cut or dues in half or lower and operate out of a self storage unit, not provide any backbone for the hobby and look like a bunch of boys with expensive toys to the higher powers . I am sure we would have lots of respect from the law-makers then. Instead we look like a somewhat professional organization .

Some have complaints about specific rules for competition.

Some don't like the fact the AMA has used money to try and make more money and keep our dues down , not all of which have made money , but that is why investments are considered a gamble.

Some think the AMA should go the membership for everything they do even though we elect people we to do that for us.

Some question spending habits , and should , nothing wrong with that , but not everyone is going to be happy with this no matter what.

And probably the majority have no Idea why they gripe about the AMA , they simply call it an evil empire and have absolutely no clue why and absolutely no suggestions how to fix a concern. perhaps they despise the fact AMA is the only reasonably priced insurance option that most flying sites CHOOSE to be chartered by , and these folks are probably to lazy to look elsewhere for their needs , or to tight to pay the premiums for equal coverage .

The fact is the AMA is our only Backbone and we should protect it, they are not going to make everybody happy, and we have the right not to like their decisions, and we have the right to come up with alternative ideas . We the members are in control of the AMA, the AMA is not in control of us, WE started the organization , WE support it and WE can make changes. BUT the fact is AMA is looking out for the HOBBY'S best interest and not the individuals . Even though there are many things we would like to see happen, they may not always be the most responsible and could potentially hurt our hobby, for example rules of Model weights and sizes and perhaps speed. Even though we may not agree with what or elected reps decide , they are looking out for whats best for the hobby, not whats best for a particular aspect.

David,

You essentially summed up my perseption of the AMA. I actually do read the monthly mag. and find it informative. I also for the most part only read the sections I have particular interest. That's a choice.

I'm starting to get a bit tired of the broad complaints without specifics/facts and suggested alternatives. If we use this forum in a constructive fashion perhaps legitimate proposals could become the output for review by our elected officials.

Well I for one enjoy the magazine as it does cover all aspects of the hobby. I was active in most parts until I got into R/C, but still like to see whats happening else where. When I am done with the mag I send it to my good friend, Tony Cincoota in Australia and he's over the moon when he gets it, that's his way of saying he loves it and reads it cover to cover. They also have an organization like AMA down under, but no magazine like ours. Just how I feel about it.

I for one accept the fact some folks will disagree and you have every right to, As usual we get a little off topic in some threads.
