I have a solution to stop all the complaining about AMA dues. Instead of writing a check to cover an entire year, let's have the AMA work like the federal government and simply have a fraction of the annual dues withheld from each paycheck.
Dues are currently $58. That comes to just under $5 per month. I am paid twice per month, so AMA would "tax" me $2.50 per pay period. For those paid weekly, you'd only lose $1.25 per check. Now, when you look at your AMA dues listed along with Federal Income tax, FICA, Medicare, etc, you won't even notice.
I belong to two other national organizations that provide insurance, National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA). Both provide services similar to what AMA provdes, insurance to members and landowners, competitive and sport launches, technical information, etc. NAR dues are $47 per year and Tripoli dues are $100 per year. Tripoli is understandably more expensive than NAR because the majority of NAR launches are the smaller "Estes" type models while Tripoli is dedicated to high power, experimental, and amateur, and other extreme (higher risk) rocketry. Given these two reference points, I hardly consider the AMA dues out of line.
Now, on the other side of the coin, we should restructure our tax system. Instead of the government siphoning money out of each paycheck, we should change the law so that we have to write checks to the government on April 15th! No politician in America would vote for that! They all know that if we had to pay in full at one time because they all know if we had to pay in full on April 15th, there wouldn't be a politician left standing on April 16th!

Haaaa Haaaaa, what a great post? What a great SATIRE on those that expect government to take care of them!!!
Actually if one doesn't make a partial tax payment on the 4/15, one is simply loaning money to the government interest free.
I wish I had the energy to again be industrious enough to do those things that kept my federal tax at the 4% of income rate.
Carried 99 dependents for 0 withholding and paid the feds some 3-4000 each 4/15 for total income of around 100,000 back in '70s and '80s.
Lots of changes since those days, but there are ways and I pay far too much for too little income these days, but if I didn't, I couldn't spend time fussing here.
Good going RoB! Heck if AMA gets wind of this they will try it. They can hire twice the staff and double the dues trying to administrate such a program. Ha, Ha, ha,!
