My 5th-Wheel hasn't bee out of my barn for over 3 years, yet I have to pay the $65 registration fee each year just in case I do decide to go for a trip. If I fail to pay, then when I do pay it is from the day it was due. That's life. Time some of these whiners learn the facts.
Sorry but those aren't the facts. You are comparing your state gov't to a flying club. There are plenty of clubs that allow pro-rating or discounts for partial year memberships. I believe the AMA has the best and safest solution for memberships renewals. Keyword safest.
How are things out there in space, STL? Glad it's you rather than me as I never lost anything in outer space so I do not need to get all spaced-out and go look for it. Did you lose something? Never mind, I have a good idea of what you lost, that is if you ever had one. [8D]

The facts are as I stated. Any perceived comparison is a figment of your imagination.

I have stated before that AMA's current membership procedures are fine with me. They do the required job. 'Nuff said!

Abel, at what point of time do you separate the "renewal" from a "newbie"?
<snip>
No need to reinvent that, Hoss. I presume AMA has the necessary mechanism in place as part of the one-time-only $29.95 Intro membership deal.

Anyway, this isn't an issue I would go on a crusade for. Just a minor item that might contribute to a broader effort directed at making AMA present itself as more friendly to the newbie. It appears AMA could benefit from efforts in this vein. They seem to be losing to the competition, and with SFA killed off, the competition is nothing - zip, zero, squat. If AMA can't show that it is better than nothing, well you know...........

The Best is arguable to say the least but safest???? Where do you get that?
I think if the AMA mandated whatever you would claim that is best way.
I think you are close to being right about that one LCS. I think whatever the AMA mandated would be the best way because the way I see it the AMA does not have a lot of problems internally. Let alone the fact that I support any organization I am a member of, or believe in. 70 years of trial and error typically has it's best solutions forward.

I know the core of the problem comes from the outside of the AMA, not inside. The reason I know this is because I've been to many AMA events and I've been to many AOPA and EAA events and I've seen the differences first hand. Don't go blaming the AMA for it's downfall, blame the people who don't do anything to make it better and then there are members that totally oppose it's existence. Of course not everyone is a bad seed in this org, but the problem is that there are just too many of them. Maybe even myself included and I recognize that, sometimes we all get in a bit over our heads on this forum. But the fact of the matter is that our hobby does not end at just flying, there is work involved to preserve it's future. Support for the org, both good and bad, comes first and should be that way for all members.

The AMA is supposed to provide us with tools, which they do and then some, we are the ones supposed to be doing MOST of the work, not them, bottom line.

Oh and the safest solution for memberships is the one they have in place. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the price the AMA pays for their insurance as well. The insurance providers have a lot of pull in how flexible the AMA can be for membership sign up policies.

Model.flyer, did you flunk math class?????? 75% of $58 is $43.50 not $43.75. Afterall, he did say he paid $43.50. 43.75+55=98.75 so how'd you get 98.50? The final price is 98.50 though, but your off with the 43.75. NOBODY ELSE NOTICED THIS, LOL.

You paid $58 for the membership?
Since you joined in the second quarter, you were billed 75% ($43.75) of a full membership ($58) for the full year of 2007?
Since you would receive a small $3 discount for joining for 2008 a year early, you were offered the second full year for $55 instead of $58 for a total of $98.50?
