I am new to the r/c airplanes, but I have many years experience with r/c cars. I was a member of ROAR (r/c car version of AMA) for two years specifically to compete in national events. For the most part this was the reason for joining. I am stating this because of the extremely low membership, ROAR had little clout. They sactioned national events; however private orgianizers are now conducting races with upto five times the attendance of the ROAR nationals.
The limited park flyer status should be viewed from the public perspective of AMA. The growing amount of "park flyers" needs to be addressed. If the public begins to see in public areas and feel threatened by them, then the "club flyers" will be grouped with the "park flyers" in any dicussions of public policy. The AMA should be strong enough to represent the model flying community as little league football, baseball, swim or soccer league. In this capaicity to represent all flyers, the AMA can lobby for facilities, etc.
Also, the younger generations need to have access to flying facilities. With more of the population centered in denser areas, it makes the real estate for flying clubs more difficult to obtain. If club fields are located further from the most populus areas, it will be more difficult for the youngsters to get access to a flying field. The AMA should lobby for facilities in the communities for facilities.
