RE: How does your club handle this?
Our club's policy is simple: On January 1st of 2009, if you are not on the AMA's roster of current (2009) members, you can not fly at our flying field and you are not a member of the club, until: 1). You pay your AMA dues and are shown on the above roster. 2). You pay your club dues. This is a "Big whoop", as generally the flying field has snow drifts blowing across it and the temperatures are well below zero. Therein lies our problem: Other then it being "The-Right-Thing-To-Do", the rule has no bite until maybe April.

We have a fun fly January 1st. We have a tractor with a blade to clean the snow off the runway. I thought you guys in MN broke holes in the ice and went swimming in the winter?

We handle it fairly simply. The "Club" year is 01/01 to 12/31 to match up with the AMA Membership year. As January is the peak of the flying season here in Florida, it is important to confirm AMA. We hold a "Club Fun Fly" in early Jan where we distribute new Club Membership Cards and gate keys. The Club Secretary (me) before the "fun fly" confirms all the AMA renewals online at the AMA website. We have about 70 members in the club and it only takes about 1 hour to check them.
Anybody that has not renewed does not get a new Club Membership Card and gate key. No flying privledges untill the AMA is confirmed. The first year we had a couple of stranglers, this year only one guy who just forgot to renew AMA.
