I've been a member for 6 years straight... I had to be a member to fly with a club. Yep, someone up there at AMA got that new car off of my dues. AMA is a waste of money, they've done nothing for me.

I've come to realize you get out what you put in.
Maybe you are looking at this the wrong way. Seems to me you are getting the ability to hang out with fellow RC pilots and have a safe field to fly at.

I feel that AMA should be like other insurance companies out there... if you haven't had to file a claim for a long time and if you are a safe flyer you should have discounts. All I've ever been doing is paying in... and nothing to show for it.
In these times many of us lost our jobs and has 3 or 4 airplanes they’d like to fly... and with 3 jugs of fuel to burn. Flying to me is a good stress reliever. ( Unless I crash or have a "dead stick" far from the runway )
Not to get way off subject, but some of us lost out in this economy and it takes a bit out of us to pay club dues and pay AMA. It seems that when ever AMA raises there fees I'm stuck with it. I love my club, but don't like AMA. My club says I need AMA... what to do? Nothing, I'm screwed and have to re-new. I'm sure some of you can afford $200 without a problem, just don't take it out on a guy or gal who struggles to make ends meet and still wants the privilege ( Or right ) to fly. This should not be just a rich mans sport. JMHO
Now I know some of you have been looking up my AMA number. Kind of makes me feel that I said something wrong at a Union meeting at my job. I don't expect AMA to give me grief now because you know who I am now. That's why I don't like advertising my AMA number.
One question I have for the AMA (because I know they read this thread and complain to moderators instead of contacting me) is how many claims they get yearly and have to pay out... compared to what they rake in? I've been a Customer Service Sales Rep for AT&T for 3 years, I'd be interested what they have to say.

That's how I see it anyway. I understand not everyone does.
Best advice I can give you is simply to not renew your membership and fly your planes in your back yard or an empty field.

Ok guys, let's drop this entire conversation. This is not what this thread is about. If you want to discuss issues such as this then let's start a new thread, but this thread needs to stay on topic.... Which is how many years you have been a member of the AMA. Any further off topic posts will be removed.

I was wrong (don't tell my wife!!!!!) sorry, Ken - yeah I think my membership is good for 6 years, and I think I'll have it for quite some time longer.
For the fliers of AMA - for Chrissakes, be SAFE. I am.

How long ago was it that dues were less than $12.00

that has been a long time for me. been in and out of AMA since the 40's, seen the good, bad, and ugly in this hobby. Then you find out all you have is AMA and lucky you have that for what it is. Just a retarded oldfart

Let's see........I started building model airplanes in 1949, and went to my first contest in 1952 or 53. You had to be a member of the AMA to be in that contest, and at my young age, needed parental approval, so I got my Junior membership then. I don't still have the card, or the airplane either. After that many years, who cares?

I have been a member for most years since about 1968. Joined while about 12 to fly at a nice control line club in Shreveport, LA. Took off a few years from aircraft models while in high school and a few more when doing a lot of high power and model rocketry in the early 1990s. Probably have been a member for around 32 of the last 41 years.

Joined in 1977 and dropped out in 1981 due to money and time issues. Rejoined in 1991 when a division chief asked if I flew planes after seeing me run a r/c car and could I help him learn to fly. I called Muncie and asked if my old number was available and was able to get it back, (great no remarking airplanes). Changed to life member two years ago but kept same number, lots more planes now .
