RE: If rules change, will you honor new rules?

Guys

I just received this from my local Senator..............

April 12, 2011

Dear Lyle,

Thank you for contacting me about exempting model aircraft from regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration. I share your support for protecting model airplane enthusiasts from unnecessary regulations.

I am pleased to let you know that the final FAA bill excludes model airplanes from new FAA regulations. I supported this provision, which passed the Senate unanimously. I also supported the FAA bill, which will modernize our aircraft control system, create jobs, and protect consumers. This bill passed the Senate by an extremely bipartisan vote of 87-8. I will continue to monitor this bill as it moves through the legislative process, and will keep your views in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please continue to keep me informed about issues of concern to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Debbie Stabenow

United States Senator

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow

Cottco

If the ruling, indeed, mirrors the senator's letter, what will the remaining RCU/AMA forum have left to debate?
well, for starters,
we know the amendment that passed unanimously
does NOT do "excludes model airplanes from new FAA regulations"
as the senator said.
What it does is create a conditional exclusion
for some folks out of the regulations against models.

That is what the fight is about.
Folks say they will obey the rules but fight them,
but I wonder just what org they will be using to do that,
since it was AMA's lobbyer that got that rule in the first place... will AMA be fighting the rule AMA got put in?

It is amazing to me how many people must have slept through various Civics/US Government classes in school and that they also never happened to catch the Schoolhouse Rock episode on "How a Bill Becomes a Law".....:)

(A bill making it through the Senate is only one step in a process....)

If congress passed it the first time there is nothing stopping them from overwriting the president when it comes back to them. They do it all the time.

Hey, sweet. They're leaving our toys alone!
not really
'Leaving our toys alone' would be if the senate said this:

(g) Special Rule for Model Aircraft.
(1) IN GENERAL.Notwithstanding any other provision of law relating to the incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into FAA plans and policies,, including this section, the Administrator shall not promulgate any rules or regulations regarding model aircraft or aircraft being developed as model aircraft.

(2) MODEL AIRCRAFT DEFINED.For purposes of this subsection, the term ``model aircraft'' means a nonhuman-carrying (unmanned) radio-controlled aircraft capable of sustained flight in the atmosphere, for the exclusive and intended use for sport, recreation, competition, or academic purposes.

unfortnunately, what the senate did say was this:

(g) Special Rule for Model Aircraft.
(1) IN GENERAL.Notwithstanding any other provision of law relating to the incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into FAA plans and policies,, including this section, the Administrator shall not promulgate any rules or regulations regarding model aircraft or aircraft being developed as model aircraft if such aircraft is
(A) flown strictly for recreational, sport, competition, or academic purposes;
(B) operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide community-based organization; and
(C) limited to not more than 55 pounds unless otherwise certified through a design, construction, inspection, flight test, and operational safety program currently administered by a community-based organization.

(2) MODEL AIRCRAFT DEFINED.For purposes of this subsection, the term ``model aircraft'' means a nonhuman-carrying (unmanned) radio-controlled aircraft capable of sustained flight in the atmosphere, navigating the airspace and flown within visual line-of-sight of the operator for the exclusive and intended use for sport, recreation, competition, or academic purposes.
I would hardly call that 'leaving alone' the DIYDrones guys' autonomous/FPV model aircraft

This thread is good for nothing but trouble. Asking people to put themselves on the spot with worthless and most assuredly incriminating info.

If the rules change, I will fly by the new rules, because I enjoy the hobby. That encludes followering the rules!
Thank You!

I need to apologize to the group that this thread got so far out of control. I was out of the loop for a few days and had very limited time to watch the forum here, and unfortunately the thread blew up. I have cleaned up the crap from this thread, so you may notice a huge chunk of the thread missing. I will only say that some people here on RCU had better learn to get along better with others here or they won't like the outcome that's going to happen. <div>

Here's a simple answer:

When I'm at an AMA event I follow there rules, when I fly elsewhere I make the rules. (this is how I been flying for 30 years, but don't tell nobody.)

Mr Sluggo......

You make a good point.

It leaves out very large models, turbines, etc. That will be / has beendebated.

My experience with two local clubs would indicate that everyone will continue to fly as they wish and no one in the club with authority will stop them..... Everyone here flys by the good old boy rules.... no AMA or other agency rules will be inforced if the members wish to fly high, wide and fast.... One big problem with the AMA Rules is that they are not rules... only recommendations....

It's a good thing your profile doesn't list a club. Or I would fear for their charter.

I understand that some of this has been beaten to death in various postings...But forget the subject and help me understand that we do not have to follow AMA guidelines and suggestions... Is that true? we can fly anyway we wish at AMA fields because there are no Rules? only guidelines and suggestions by AMA....

That is right to a point. If the AMA finds out they may pull the clubs Charter. So no insurance. If the property is leased then they will likely run you off when the AMA notifies them that you have no insurance..

flythesky,
On a side note, I am amazed at the number of people that promote anarchy.
Read these forums often enough and you will see the same posters against everything and anything posted by anybody anytime! Rules for society and safety are for others in their minds...

If not for anarchy, you would be subjects of a monarchy in his/her colony. Careful what you wish for............

Sorry to see you have thrown in the towel, and thanks for persevering up 'till now. I found your poll and ensuing discussion to be informative and thought provoking.
