  • NAMBA did charge $90 for me AND THE WIFE to be members for a year
  • The average flying club would charge me a fairly substantial fee for being a member whether I use the facilities provided or not
  • My boating club, R/C Unlimiteds, charge me $15 per year, per boat, for membership and a participation fee for each race I go to for awards for winners so I only pay for what I use.
  • The AMA has raised it's membership rates TWICE in the past 8 years
  • NAMBA HAS NOT raised their membership rates since I first became a member, almost 10 years ago
My question is why is it that NAMBA has not felt the need to raise their rates in over 10 years while the AMA has raised theirs twice? Let's see if we can figure this one out :
  • AMA has a overpriced PAID staff that is borderline incompetent, NAMBA has a volunteer staff
  • AMA has a facility that includes a museum that most don't care about and a field that is rarely used by anyone from outside the Muncie area, NAMBA has none of that to spend money on
  • AMA prints a quarterly magazine that costs substantial amounts of money, NAMBA has a newsletter that costs little more than ink and paper
Sounds to me like NAMBA doesn't spend more than it has to while the AMA spends money because they have it. Kind of like watching the Democrats trying to pass their multi-billion dollar bills that don't benefit the people, just the organization.

Would it be possible for NAMBA to cover RC aeromodelling?

Hydro Junkie 07-19-2022 09:01 AM

Good question. You would have to ask their secretary, Al Waters, on that one

BarracudaHockey 07-19-2022 09:39 AM

Seriously?? That's awesome

The NAMBA guy is named Waters.....i needed a laugh today, thanks!!!

Hydro Junkie 07-19-2022 10:59 AM

I kid you not. Here's a link to the page on their website that shows it:

Comparing AMA to NAMBA is apples to oranges.

Hydro Junkie 07-19-2022 12:06 PM

They both do the same things:
  • They provide insurance
  • They both keep track of membership
  • They both hold national competitions
  • They both sanction the clubs that run under their insurance
  • They both set rules the clubs must follow
They both do different things:
  • NAMBA lets the districs run events in their districs
  • NAMBA will allow anyone to run for office, not just leader members or designated CDs
  • NAMBA has a moving national competition system that lets the districts hold the competitions on a rotating basis where all AMA national events are held in Muncie. This year's NAMBA Nationals will be in Seaside CA in October while last year's event was at Legg Lake CA, 2019 was in SLC, 2018 in Carrollton TX, etc
  • NAMBA DOESN'T GO THROUGH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR IN USELESS OVERHEAD!!!!!!!

I can compare apples to oranges.......

By comparison, , , , neither make good baseballs.

And yes, I've tried.... :p

Aside from hosting F3A team selections, NATs, National fun fly etc. AMA gives scholarships. They have a flying site assistance program

But the big difference is that the AMA lobbies government.

So what. The National Square and Folk Dance Federation, the Eagles, VFW and American Legion also give scholarships too. When was the last time Muncie gave money to a flying site? Does anyone really know?

Just not very effectively after the "drone fiasco" when they tried to get the FAA to force all R/C fliers to join the AMA. As I said, wasted overhead by the millions

Sorry Hydro but when you start talking boats and dancing on an aero modeling forum it just looks like you’re grasping.

Here's the answer I got from the secretary of NAMBA. "We can’t complete with AMA. They are so big, that they are self-supportive. To obtain the liability coverage we have, we had to direct it towards model boats only rather than cars and planes which was many years ago the case. NAMBA was created and spun off from WAM (Western Association of Modelers) to create its own model boating organization similar to IMPBA".

Irrelevant to the topic of comparing the two organizations.

Not at all. Just showing that other organizations do the same things the AMA says it does without having a captive audience. I don't have to be a NAMBA member to run my boats in any lake that powerboats are allowed and I don't have to be a club member to go dancing at any club in the world. Can't say that about the AMA or their associated flying clubs

LOL. I could say I’ve played basketball with NBA players too, but it wouldn’t make me any more relevant as a basketball player.

Maybe we should give the AMA a participation trophy, THAT might be relevant…

I think you and Hydro are much more deserving of a participation trophy. However what we ended up From the FAA wasn’t as bad as what was originally proposed. Not as effective as what we had hoped for but does demonstrate some effectiveness on their part. Unlike the constant broken record being played here.

Hydro Junkie 07-19-2022 03:08 PM

I might take a participation trophy if I was actually participating in something that actually required participation. This thread doesn't require more than a couple of brain cells to prove my point in so......

Then why bring it up in the first place?

Too much or not enough? I'm spending over $1,000 over three weekends this month on boat racing, food and lodging. I think, for the month of July, that's plenty
Then again, I spent another $175 on parts just yesterday so......
