Re: Re: Why bother?
Originally posted by Hossfly Perhaps someone else should practice getting real. The AMA/TSA session did not say anything about carrying RC stuff *ON-BOARD* an airliner but rather was defining the CHECKED BAGGAGE issue. For those that go across the country for competitions or maybe just sport, carrying a box with model airplanes as CHECKED BAGGAGE is a near-prohibitive operation. Some have been refused simply because the engines had *oily substances*. Now that ALL baggage is X-rayed, anything unusual gets the thumbs-down as well as the subject-knowledge level of the quoted post. AMA officials -- in this case -- are simply performing a job that is part of education about how serious this RC (and CL/FF) sport can be. There is always much more to anything than that which the casual observer can reach out and see, touch or feel. I haven't attempted to carry competition models in the airline within the past 8 or so years. However as an airline pilot up until 7 years ago, and one who frequently jumps on an airplane to go places and one that has seen this so-called *Security* cancer gobble up everything in its path, resulting in nothing more than fiscal chaos for the airline industry, I would be well willing to RISK that brand of security. IMO, that is a good reason to *BOTHER*. "...willing to RISK that brand of security." I AM VERY GLAD, VERY VERY GLAD you are no longer a passenger pilot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've heard the words from that press that increased (some say 100%) screening of all bags is now in place. "Now" being during the past month. Was this in place when the AMA talked with the TSB? Also, I've searched, more than once, for proof of a 100% baggage check. In the most recent documents/rules/regulations, the only thing that is indicated is that an Airline must have a passenger match system.(CAPPS) This system "ONLY" makes sure that the bag placed in the cargo compartments matches with a ticket for a passenger who has checked in. There is no requirement to check that the passenger is on board. Additionally, the only bags that "Require" screening are those that belong to someone who do not fit CAPPS criteria. From FAA RULE "CAPPS screens out passengers for whom additional security procedures are unnecessary. So, the only benefit in training would be "IF" a person does not meet the CAPPS criteria and his/her bags "happen" to be screened. Hossfly, security in our country MUST be taken more serious! The annoyance/ inconvenience of not being able to mobilize a hobby, is perfectly acceptable to me! We as a community should be eager to part with a few conveniences in the quest for a secure nation! It is up to Us not our government to keep ourselves safe on a daily basis! The less we give a screener to think about, the better they can do their job! |

There, I am more safety concious than you!!....how dare you allow clothes, personal computers, cell phones, Christmas presents, baby strollers, technicians equipment, trade show displays etc on a plane!! Why do you think people fly anyway?!? |

Originally posted by mr_matt I tell you what, I think people should only be allowed to were airline supplied tunics and nothing else. No baggage, no shoes, no clothes. There, I am more safety concious than you!!....how dare you allow clothes, personal computers, cell phones, Christmas presents, baby strollers, technicians equipment, trade show displays etc on a plane!! Why do you think people fly anyway?!? You should notice that I said, "...a few" and that I am not speaking about simple everyday items that any screener should be able to recognize as "Normal" and "Safe." Let's take that idea further: What about a chemistry buff? Should he/she be allowed to carry chemicals to a national science fair for competition? How about master carpenters tools? Surgeons knives? Ham Radios? Bicycles? Blower for a 426 Hemi? What do we "Not" teach screeners to look for? They should only have to accept "Normal" life items which we can all recognize as OK. Unfortunately, RC Hobby equipment is neither "Normal" to the majority of our country, nor is it easy to identify as "Safe." Laptops? Well, I do have my doubt as to the need, but I'll give up that ground. No need to ban everything, but no need to accept everything either. Right? Weed out the abnormal. |

Sky Viper; I've heard the words from that press that increased (some say 100%) screening of all bags is now in place. "Now" being during the past month. Was this in place when the AMA talked with the TSB? <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< AMA TSA -- according to the article met on Jan. 10, '03. I went to Chicago on 01/11. 100% screening of CHECKED baggage was in effect on that date (from 1st/1st actually) at both Houston and Chicago. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> SV: Also, I've searched, more than once, for proof of a 100% baggage check. <<<<<<<<< Go buy a ticket and go check a bag. Be certain to place something funny looking -- your OS. 1.4, in the bag and LOCK the bag. The ripped off zipper should give even you a decent clue as to what the bungling bureaucracy now handles things. >>>>>>>> SV: In the most recent documents/rules/regulations, the only thing that is indicated is that an Airline must have a passenger match system.(CAPPS) This system "ONLY" makes sure that the bag placed in the cargo compartments matches with a ticket for a passenger who has checked in. Over 15 years ago I held at the gate several times when a passenger jumped ship at the last moment and had checked baggage on board. Anyone wanting to take a machine down has no objection to buying a ticket. I POed the company management a few times, but one thing FAA does is give the Captain total authority. How well he uses that authority is HIS choice. >>>>>>>>>> Additionally, the only bags that "Require" screening are those that belong to someone who do not fit CAPPS criteria. Dum- A-- airport screeners had no clue of the hero and no clue of a Medal of Honor. Bush and company have now made them federal employees. No matter the amount of governmental bureaucracy, airport *security* is a joke, which I don't find very funny. |

Bravo, Horrace, bravo.
I had to fly a few times on business post-9/11, and noted a disproportionate number of "grannies" and WASP families being pulled over for the "security search". A joke and waste of time. Just as security was pre-9/11, it inconveniences the honest traveller and amuses the terrorist. Burger-flipper security is a joke. |

Keep adding information / criteria for them to keep up with and the joke will grow. By the way, you speaking of how it was years ago is no longer relavent. I think you are confusing liberties and conveniences. Nobody is taking away your abilty to compete in or move RC equipment quickly around the country. We just want it done is such a way that it does not pose further confusion on our attempt to keep each other safe. So what if you can't take it on the same plane?!?! Put it on a Fed Ex Plane and nullify the need for further security jokes! |

WASP White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Generic term for an American or European person. Also, but less common, Women's Air Service Pilot. WESP? Willing Eager Soaring Pilot?
