Must own a computer?
We do not have a email address on file for the Safety Coordinator, ****** *******, this is a requirement to hold this position. We cannot process the charter without this information please contact me as soon as possible.
Lois Mock AMA Club Secretary [email protected] (800)435-9262 ext. 291 Just sent to me awhile ago, I guess you hafta own a computer now to be a safety officer of ama or lose your charter. This bunch gets stranger each day..... Maybe they will give us a grant to buy the S.O. a computer....[>:] Ron |
RE: Must own a computer?
Not at all...you simply need to have a valid e-mail address to be safety coordinator. Local library, internet cafe, neighbor, friend, you at work...any of these might suffice as a means to acquire and check a free email account.
And it's a sensible requirement, imo, as changes to the safety code, or new information about safe practices might be critically important, and require a known and viable method of immediate communication. Requiring e-mail for all club officers would be excessive, imo, but requiring email for a safety coordinator makes perfect sense, imo. |
RE: Must own a computer?
I thought AMA had a monthly newsletter to get important info and ARF Ads to the members,
in particular, to the thousands of AMA members that are not actually in any local club that would need to know Safety Code Changes or other Safety Officer stuff (since they are their own SO) |

Yay. :D I rarely do email on my computer these days. Most times when I open it up on the computer it's just to clear out all the backlog. |

This actually started last year or the year before, and yes it is a stupid policy.

It takes 3 days for a letter to get where it needs to go......nothing could possibly be so urgent where 3 days will make that much of a difference.
The children of the Nintendo generation have finally come of age and this is why we have this fast food mentality invading every nook and cranny of our daily lives. These are the folks who walk around all day talking into those "things" hanging off the sides of their faces. When the lights do go out, these technology dependent types have a life expectancy of about 30 minutes in the cold. |

I never said it was difficult, I said it was a STUPID policy. Presumably, the purpose of the e-mail is to quickly disseminate messages. So under the local library and internet café scenario the safety officer would need to make a trip every day to check e-mail. If the safety officer does not need to check the-e-mail every day, or even once a week, then the information can just be sent out in the magazine. |

RE: Must own a computer?
ORIGINAL: MikeL Exactly. Some of you people try to pretend that life is far more difficult than it is. Sure, one can get an email address, and then go to the library or someplace else to check if he has any emails. But you've got to askyourself, why is AMA insisting on this? Is it for "instant" notification, or just for the convenience of those needing to contact someone? If it's for "instant" communication, then is it really going to work very well for those who don't have a PC and would be expected to go to the library or wherever to check if they have received anything. That's not really a realistic solution to THAT problem. If it's strictly for the convenience of AMA staffers, and to reduce mailing costs or manpower costs to make phone calls, then that's another issue. Even then, should the AMA expect club officials to purchase equipment or services they may not want, just for the staffers convenience? Or should AMA contact folks as needed through whatever means that individual would prefer? I would be willing to bet that 90% or more of clubs can currently be contacted by email. Does it really matter if that contact is the safety officer or not? I don't think so. Would it save AMA some money or time if that was 100%? Probably yes, but should AMA be working for the convenience of it's members, or should it's members be working for AMA's convenience? IMO the mindset that AMA won't work with a chartered club that doesn't have an email address for it's safety officer is not a mindset that should be fostered. |

RE: Must own a computer?
What's amusing is that so many people think this is a stupid requirement, but then you see many of the same people up in arms because the AMA does not send out notifications about important items like FAA issued TFRs and so on.

RE: Must own a computer?
You can list the email address of another officer for the SO's email, they have accepted that in previous years. I am not sure but I think the original idea was if there is a 'major accident" at your field the SO could notify Muncie immediately by email. How that is better than the telephone I don't know. Also, if they need to send some emergency notice out to SO's they can do it with a mass email. I understand the purpose, but making it a charter requirement seems to much. The paperwork and requirements for a club grows a little every year, just like all other bureaucracies.

RE: Must own a computer?
She provided an 800#. Did anybody call and ask what to do if S. O. doesn't have an E-mail?
|
RE: Must own a computer?
The Safety Officer also is to report incidents/accidents that occur. And as was already mentioned, to get major accident info to the AMA as soon as possible. All of this can be done on a computer in 1 minute! It IS a good idea.

ORIGINAL: Kemosobie She provided an 800#. Did anybody call and ask what to do if S. O. doesn't have an E-mail? YES, I did. She finally called me back. She said some committee made this rule an that the way it is. So we ended up using the VP's email addy an everything will just go to him. They are more interested in selling your email probably than anything. Thats alright though, next year we just won't have a club anymore. The land owner says he has enough ins to cover anything. The guys can pay the $58 an go fly then. Ron |
RE: Must own a computer?
The charter package states,"Safety Coodinator must have access to E-mail." All he needs is access. So if another officer has e-mail just use thier's
Drama over. |
RE: Must own a computer?
Of course I'm sure everybody at your club takes their computer to the field with'em....
I guess they don't have them telephone things where you live anymore? edit-this is met for the guy below ya kemo Ron |

You know what, you seem to butt into everything here. Why do you even bother looking at these threads if you don't like whos in it? Your a typical northerner anyway.
