Posting ATTITUDES and some suggestions
The following are a couple of observations of mine about these forums, RCU, RCG, AMA and others. If these sounds like I’m lecturing please excuse me but I guess I am. First off:
Posting with ATTITUDE: Too often I see a perfectly good thread or question deteriorate because someone posts with attitude. By that I mean they may have a good point but at the end they add some quip or zinger that, in my mind, nullifies or detracts from what they have to say. Usually a thread that starts this way dies an early death as it should. Suggestion: If one has a detracting/supporting opinion they wish to add to an ongoing thread plainly state it, period. Do not add at the end or start it with some comment that you know will draw fire. It very much diminishes what you’re trying to say. Answering with ATTITUDE: Probably worse than posting with attitude is answering with attitude. I’m probably as guilty of this as anyone and I’ll be striving to control it more in the future. The only thing it accomplishes is more attitudes and then the moderator steps in to moderate and everyone starts pointing fingers. Suggestion: Don’t Levity, flippancy: Remarks or behavior intended to be amusing, especially when they are out of keeping with a serious occasion. Very difficult to pull off successfully in a text forum. Suggestion: Don’t Punctuation: My humble attempt at levity but true all the same. Incorrect punctuation can change the whole meaning of the intended remark. Let’s eat grandpa! Let’s eat, grandpa! Commas, they save lives. Suggestion: Be careful. End of lecture. Additions or comments to the above suggestions are welcome. 14 May 2010, The following added at the request of easytiger: EXCESSIVE POSTING: Those who feel a need to add a post or several posts to every single thread, the vast majority of which contribute nothing. SUGGESTION: If you don't actually have any experience with an item, don't post about it...and before you hit the "post message" button, please look at your post and weigh it against this simple standard...If it were ten cents per post, would I bother to post this? |

RE: Posting ATTITUDES and some suggestions
Frank, great post. I agree with you 110%. Hence the reason I don't post in the AMA Forum very often. More times than not, someone has to post a smart @$$ comment, attack people on the post and I just don't feel like sifting through all the BS to get the information. I hope people will take your advice.

RE: Posting ATTITUDES and some suggestions
I rarely am angry when posting. Even when my posts sound angry I am not, not really. I tend to exagerate my emotions, if slightly ticked off I probably seem on the verge of shouting. I think many do that.

RE: Posting ATTITUDES and some suggestions
I like the "Excessive posting" observation.
I have a feeling some folks actually sit on top of threads just so they can add their comment as soon as another comment appears. Its as if they're having a face to face conversation...except its in a forum  |
RE: Posting ATTITUDES and some suggestions
P-51B what about People Hijacking threads and talking about something completely unrelated to the topic

RE: Posting ATTITUDES and some suggestions
Its interesting that in a society where so much communication is through the written word (emails, text forums) that so few people have an appreciation for how to write. I think its clearly a case of the writer adding emphasis in their own mind as they write. It does change the meaning, and subsequently the way its read.
I write for a living, and one of the things I always do is write the original version, then put it down for a few days. Does it say the same thing three days later? Many times it doesn't. I'm not suggesting that people draft postings and wait three days. I do believe the OPs suggestions are sound, and can lead to a greater degree of civility in this forum. Hopefully these suggestions will allow for broader discussion of what often seem to be "hot-button" issues. Brad |

There was a comment on Tv about the Internet giving everyone the opportunity to be a jerk. However, I think it is OK if you let the opportunity pass you by.[8D]
