RE: Anyone Flying the New <span class=
I flew my Sukhoi today with the Siato .72 APC 13-4 prop. I have servos in the tail. I am really happy with this airplane. Very stable and very aerobatic. I even torque rolled it. It will hover with the Siato. I am at 6.2 lbs. I was really suprised. It does the fastest knife-edge spins I have ever done. It lands pretty nice with no stall tendencies.

Flew both Sat. & Sun. unbelievably NO trim needed... no bad habits as long as you keep low throws. As mentioned before, 90 mm is my CG and...she just flows and landings are smooth. I'm completely surprised. MAN what a deal.

I had the local Pro Maiden the sukhoi today ( i was afraid that if it had some strange habit I wouldnt be able to respond quickly enough). Strong winds prevented a more daring evaluation I can say this plane was the least affected by the wind. The YS .63 has all the power you would need . two clicks of elevator is all she needed. No nasty habits to report. Point it in a direction and thats where she goes. The high wind helped slow it down at landing. My cg is at the forward recomendation, 11 oz tank installed, so its probably a little forward of that for the first few minutes till the fuel burns off.
The plane was a steal at 75$ and is still a great deal. Everyone who saw it wanted to know where to get one.
The Giles will get a Magnum .52, I'll get to that later.
So if you were sitting on the fence, there are enough positive reports out there to tell you to BUY IT. A great deal compared to Kyosho.

Just out of interest,
Are any guys having problems with overheating?
The reason I say this, is because when I had my Suk with the little GMS 47, she would overheat when I ran it full power on the ground for anything longer than 20 secs.
I think in hindsight, the problem was probably the huge open cowl up front and very little space for the air to exit between the big GMS sausage muffler and the cowl.
If I still had her, I'd cut more of the cowl under where the muffler sits and allow better circulation.

I have a couple of tower motors. Uncowled they DO NOT run hot. Have you tried running the motor uncowled? I'm running a Four Stroke and left plenty of room for ventalation. I chose to mount the motor fully inverted so half of the lower scoop is gone and there is a generous clearance given round the muffler.

I haven't had any problems with overheating....I'm running a TT Pro .46 and a Tower Hobbies .46 muffler. However, my cowl has a small area all the way around the back of it that is open......I used small squares of 1/16" ply glued to the fuselage to mount my cowl, so it left a little "breathing room" at the back of the cowl for air to exit.

Fantastic! Congrats on a successful maiden flight.
I am also interested in setting up my Suk with the Saito .72; I thought to help balance without adding weight locating the servos in the tail would help. Did you mount yours in the standard location or in the tail? Both rudder and elevator servos, or just elevators? Did you have any balancing or mounting issues with the servo location you ultimately chose, using the Saito??
Inquiring minds want to know...

I would agree that you need to open up the exit of the cowl to let it out the hot air. It's got no where to go except recirculate.

Theres no need to mount servos in tail, but I did notice a slight nose over once on take off & landing....wheels too small...I did not use the stock wheels... just ones I had laying around (2.5"). Our club field is turf and a bit bumpy...3" should fix. Pauly's right, 16ozs is all the 72 weighs. This plane is not a 3D'er, but I can imagine a seasoned 3D'er pilot can work on it w/ a larger engine. I truely believe that the planes structure could handle it w/ a little bit of Mods.[sm=cool.gif]

INTER;
No overheating problems. I did the same thing as Glowplug. My cowl had alot space between cowl & fuse...enough for 1/4" ply stock.[sm=thumbup.gif]

Do you need a Pitts style muffler for a 2 stroke on this plane? I'm looking for a motor for mine and don't want to have to cut away at the plane or cowl too much. I'm looking at OS 50SX or Irvine .53 ABC.

It is built with a normal muffler in mind. There is a channel underneath to send a large portion of the muffler into... with a cut out in the cowl over that area, it all fits nicely. It is a large cut with most "normal" mufflers, but it is directly on the bottom of the model and less noticeable. I'm sure you will find some pictures on here that show this.
With that in mind, a pitts muffler would always make the installation better... but definately not a required item on this plane.

I cant personally say because i'm running an inverted 4 st. I have read posts that indicate that the scoop like bulge on hte bottom of the cowl pretty much covers most of the stock muffler. Theres a scooped out area on the bottom of the fuse that matches the cowl . The Mfg intended you to run a std muffler on this plane. Even with as much as I cut at the center of that bulge for my Four stroke you dont really notice it. There should be some pix that show this in this string. the motor gets mounted inverted at about 7:30 so the stock muffler is at the center bottom of the fuse. the cowl is pretty big.

okay... this picture shows the 2 cycle muffler in flight... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfi...74/Jo31687.jpg
Gives a good idea of what you are looking at. Think it can be hidden even more in some cases.

I just checked out the Sukhoi on Tower's site. Yesterday it was available as a backorder, today it is "temporarily unavailable" even as a back order. Is the planes available anywhere else? [&o]

The Giles is very nice as well.
Just a suggestion.
They are nearly identical in size and quality.

Indeed it is . I got the Giles too but have not had a chance to assemble it yet. The quality is just as good as the Suk, and from what I understand, flies really good too.
