I just picked one of these up today.. Just wondering how good they hover if they do at all? How are the takeoffs and landings with that WIDE wing.
I have a .46 LA going in it.

With enough power anything can hover, but it won't for long. The slow poke isn't designed as a fun fly. Its a slow flier, with a huge wing and light weight, it goes slow. I'm guessing the airfoil is a flat bottom which would make hovering even harder.

Gubbs3 is right. The SP-Sport 40 is a slow flying plane the will fly great with the engine you plan to use, but no chance whatsoever of it hovering with that power.
Landings are easy, but the plane often comes out quite tail heavy. I use a 4-stroke because they tend to be a bit heavier for their displacement.
I found a Magnum 52 4-stroke to be a good choice, and no added lead (weight) was required.
I also fly it as a float plane, and it's a blast.

rcaholic,
how did you get your slowpoke to balance without any added weight? I have one with a Magnum 61 4stroke and had to add about 3 ounces of weight.

Crashland:

Sorry . . it's been a long time since I owned my Slow Poke Sport 40, but I'm certain I didn't have to add any weight anywhere. If you haven't already done so . . . consider moving airborne components (battery, and receiver) to locations that might solve your balance problem. I've occasionally used a battery with larger cells (heavier) to help move the CG to within the recommended range. Good Luck.

I am flying a Slowpoke Sport with a Tower Hobbies .46 in it. It is a second plane after my Nexstar which is gonna get stripped to outfit a Sky Raider low wing. I am really having a blast with the SP. It will loop in its own length, does great rolls, snaps well, and will do most aerobatics short of 3-d. I managed 3 outside loops ina row, really tight. Be careful of the low rates in the manual. The elevator settings for low rate were really low. I had to increase them. The plane flys well in any weather, and will fly faster than I expected when you open it up. My only complaint is landing. I am having som,e difficulty getting the thing to come down. Not the fault of the plane entirely as I am still a new pilot. You will have a blast with it. With my .46 installed, I added a 2 ounce spinner weight, and 1 ounce under the engine. You will see what I mean about under the engine when you put it together. The plane was 109 bucks, and has provided me with a grand of entertainment. It is an excellant choice.

Im just waiting for the rain to clear and the wind to die down to at least 10mph (less would be better) rather than 20mph +.

I got mine done today. Balanced, throws set. I have a magnum 61 4stroke on it. From what I have read it will probly pull the wings off LOL!
