Default Converting Parkzone Cub??

Hello everyone. I bought a Parkzone J-3 Cub years ago (not the micro) which had the NiMh battery. I am interested in getting this thing going again but I am thinking of converting it to BNF to work with my Spektrum radio. I am a total newbie when it comes to the know how of converting RC's but I enjoy the challenges of DIY. Ideally I would like this plane to fly again using a Li-Po battery. Do I go with a brushless motor? I would love to hear some recommendations and/or if you know anyone that has done something similar who would be willing to help me out. Keep in mind, I am new to this.
Thanks for your help, all.
