Another experiment - Lanier P-47N ARF

Ok, I decided I needed to add another warbird to my fleet ... I have never tried a P-47 ... and there are not that many .40 size P-47 ARFs out there. I did my due diligence by searching RCU and all of the online distributors. Now ... I know that everybody has their own opinion about each ARF maker. I have built a few from all of the major companies and a few from the lesser known folks ... I have come to one conclusion ... they all have problems ... sooner or later. I just finished a .40 size AT-6 Texan from one of the major brands ... and ... basically, it was a P.O.S.!!!! This was the second Texan I have built from that maker (kinda lost the first in a mid-air [
] ) so I know they normally have great quality. I fixed the flaws and misses in quality control, took my time and the second Texan actually flies MUCH better than the 1st did
Anyway ... I have read all of the posts about the Lanier P-47 and about Lanier in general. I think people have a 50/50 love/hate opinion about Lanier ... but I think most of the hate side comes from bad after-tastes from dealing with their customer support. Hopefully, I will not have to follow that path ... but I decided the quality could not be any worse than the Texan I just finished so I'm gonna give them a try. My local HS agreed to order the Lanier P-47 ARF and would return it after my DETAILED inspection if I was not completely happy with the construction and material quality.
So far .. I am impressed
The quality seems to be at least on par with the major brands (GP, H9, etc) and much better than most of the "small guy" brands ... especially the hardware. The hardware supplied is by far the best of any I've seen. The covering will take very limited time with a heat gun to get wrinkle free (I have spent hours on some). Of course I will go over all seams with an iron and I will strengthen the firewall and landing gear block areas ... I have learned to do that to ALL OF THEM!!
I will update this thread as I go along and give non-biased opinions.

I had this plane and would not buy another ARF from this Company. Too cheezy!
Nothing fit right,(tail,wing fillets) parts very warped, and too soft in the tail area.
I did not want to waste money on retracts,so fixed it went.
It will fly OK on a .46, but it needs more power.
Others told me they felt the same about it with there`s.
Its poss. that they are building them better,mine was a year old.
Use diff. decals,the one`s that come with it are too big and don`t look right.
Just check it over very good,make sure all fits right and take your time gluing the wing fillets.
It flys good.

Well, I have the wing together and so-far-so-good. Everything is fitting very well. I'm not real fond of the belly pan though. I used the fuse as a pattern and made end caps for it. They want me to glue the belly pan to the bottom of the wing but ... it seems this will make the pan real likely to fall off. I am still thinking of a good way to attach it to the wing.

I have this plane. I first flew it with a Saito 65 and two old battery packs taped together for weight behind the cowl. This is a tail heavy plane. I also added a couple of ounces to the firewall. It flew decent but really didn't have alot of power. I now have a Magnum 91 four stroke in. Plenty of power, flies great. I was then able to take the couple of ounces off of the firewall but had to leave the two extra batteries in for weight. Balance it at the rear of the recommended cg. I had it towards the front of the cg range at first and it would do a nasty tip stall and snap on landing. Now when it stalls it just drops without dropping the wing. Make sure you have plenty of speed on landing. This thing like to land fast. Good luck.

I glued 1/2" triangle stock along the inside edge of the belly pan to get more of a good surface to glue to the wing.
You can also use a heat gun(real lightly) to heat the fillets and belly pan to reshape them to fit better.
Just hold them to shape until it cools.
It works good,just watch the heat.

I say you just ditch the project and take it back to the hobby shop. Im glad someone is happy with Lanier, starting to get bummed out hearing all the bad stuff.

I agree!!! But my LHS will not take it back. I get crappy service there .. that's why I keep going back.
